Live Life Independently

One in six people in the UK are deaf or hard of hearing, with more than 50% of people over the age of 60 having some degree of hearing loss due to the ageing process.

At the moment there is no ‘cure’ for deafness caused by ageing, but Action on Hearing Loss is funding research into a possible cure for hearing loss and tinnitus, and modern hearing aids can make a huge difference, making it possible to communicate with less stress and to live a full and independent life.

Retaining independence is a key issue for older people, especially those who are losing their hearing, but it’s often friends and family who notice the hearing loss first. So if you have people around you suggesting that you might be losing your hearing, listen to them and make an appointment to see your GP. In the meantime you could try Action on Hearing Loss’ (previously the RNID and the UK’s leading deaf and hearing loss charity) online hearing check, and browse through their shopping pages to see the multitude of other aids that will help you to take control of your hearing and live the life you choose.

The charity have listed some of the telltale signs to look out for below and included some examples of products that will keep you living safely and independently, should you discover your hearing is fading.

Ask yourself, do you:

  • often ask people to repeat what they say?
  • often misunderstand what is being said?
  • have trouble hearing in groups?
  • think others mumble?
  • fail to hear others coming into the room?
  • have trouble hearing the doorbell or telephone ringing?
  • often get confused about which direction sound is coming from?
  • need to turn up the volume of your TV or music when it’s fine for others?
  • dread going to pubs, parties and other noisy places?

If the answer is YES to any of the above make an appointment to have your hearing professionally tested

The Triple Tell Timer allows you to cook without worrying about hearing the timer. Keep it in your pocket or attach it to clothing and it’ll flash and vibratewhen dinner’s ready.

The Bellman VisitSystem can not only alert you to the door or telephone, but also smoke and even baby alarms. It’s fully mobile with a long range and a variety of options to alert you and get your attention. Couple it with a vibrating pillow pad and you’ll sleep easy in your bed every night, unless of course, you’re babysitting the grandkids!
