A few jobs to keep your garden looking its best

Lovely summer days can be enjoyed in the garden this month, but do a few jobs and you’ll keep your garden looking better for longer:

  1. Now’s the time to prune your Wisteria
  2. Keep the secateurs out and give your restricted fruits a summer prune as well
  3. As you’re wandering round admiring your garden, take the time to deadhead flowering plants – they’ll reward you with more flowers for longer
  4. Keep up with the watering, especially for your new plants and containers – it would be a share if they shrivelled up through lack of care – ask a neighbour to water if you go on holiday or consider an automatic watering system
  5. Start collecting the seed that is ready from all your favourite plants so that you can get more plants for free next year

Look after your veg

Hopefully you are already enjoying some of the fruits of your labours this year but keep on looking after your veg plot this month to ensure your harvest doesn’t disappoint. Watering is really important – irregular watering will result in blossom end rot in your tomatoes, root vegetables will split and runner bean flowers will not turn into beans. Keep weeding as the weeds will compete with your veg plants for water.

Music in the garden

Sit back and relax and enjoy music in the garden at RHS Harlow Carr every Sunday during August. Live music is on at intervals between 11am and 4pm near Betty’s Teahouse. Why not bring a picnic and a rug and enjoy a lazy summer Sunday afternoon?

Hyde Hall Flower Show

Head along to RHS Hyde Hall from July 31 to August 3 for an inspiring day with talks and advice from garden experts, and more than 50 nurseries and tradestands on site – including Beth Chatto Gardens, which specialises in drought-tolerant plants.

There will be plenty of refreshments to be enjoyed, and RHS members can enjoy a Flower Show breakfast package, which includes a garden tour, English breakfast and early entry to the show.
