Keep your lawns looking luscious
It’s important this month that while taking care of plants in the garden that you maintain and care for your lawn as well.
Regularly mow lawns (except through droughts) at a raised cutting height in the hot weather, as the growth slows considerably and the height helps the grass to wear better and prevent drying out. However don’t be too alarmed if brown patches do appear on lawns as the autumn rain will soon revive it quickly. Extra watering will be needed for newly turfed or sown grass to give it a chance of survival through its first summer weather, however if an fully green lawn is what you are after then using a sprinkler to wet the roots of the grass once a week will be sufficient enough without wasting water. This month is also the last time to apply liquid fertilisers to lawns for optimum growth, but tackle persistent weeds with a soluble weed or feed product.
Handle problems quickly
Along with the general care and maintenance of your fruit & vegetables, keep a keen eye out for troublesome pests and diseases that can affect the growth and yield of your produce. This month it’s particularly important to regularly check for aphids such as the woolly aphid; asparagus beetle and tomato/potato blight, which should all be dealt with straightaway. Also with tomatoes watch out for early signs of blossom end rot which takes the form of sunken brown patches. Other pests and diseases to look out for are the likes of plum and pear rust and the pear blister mite, all of which need to be taken care of quickly to stop further spreading and infection.
Entertainingly Different’s “The Quest”
For an event to take the whole family to, come along to RHS Garden Rosemoor on the 29 July for a special interactive promenade written specifically for the RHS. Between 11.30am & 4pm, this family friendly entertainment will be performed by Rob Pudner and Entertainingly Different, twice throughout the day. With RHS Garden Rosemoor as its backdrop, this magical quest brings to life stories, live music & original songs, woven with a mystical adventure and captivating characters that is sure to entertain old and young alike. Normal garden admission applies.
RHS Members Evening
Enjoy the benefits of being an RHS Member, on selected Thursday evenings through July (10-31) at RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Between 6pm & 9pm, the garden has exclusively extended their opening times to allow members to take in and appreciate the surroundings that RHS Garden Harlow Carr has to offer. There is also the chance to immerse your senses, in live jazz music to accompany the serene dusk setting which, will play between 6pm & 8pm within the garden by Bettys Teahouse. The last admission for members (plus 2 guests) is 7.30pm. This special event is one not to be missed so if you’re not a member already, why not join.
