Last chance lawns

It’s the last chance this month to get your lawns prepped for the winter months ahead.

Give lawns – even those sown recently – a mow to tidy them up, but don’t cut lower than 2.5cm (1in). Also, to prevent weeds growing out of control, top them with the mower. With the autumn chill about, this is the last time of the year when you can renovate lawns either by sowing grass seed, which will need light polythene and light rain to aid germination, or laying turf, where a suitable lawn feed with low nitrogen will stop green growth that will not survive the cold. In general, giving lawns a good raking of fallen leaves and prepping the ground by aeration or scarification will all aid in giving it the air and light penetration it needs.

Fruit maintenance

Remember not to neglect the fruit in your garden this month. Regular maintenance and care is just as important as the upkeep of the rest of the garden. Jobs to do include removing any damaged stalks from fruits with stones in them and painting the wounds to help keep them going through the next few months. It’s a good time to start preparing for new bushes, fruit trees, nuts, canes and vines by getting the ground ready. You can also trim cranberry beds and dig up any roots from hybrid and blackberries.

Pumpkin and Woodcraft Weekend

For a fun autumn activity weekend, visit RHS Garden Rosemoor on 25 & 26 October for the Pumpkin and Woodcraft Weekend. Between 10am and 3pm each day, you can see artists working on different traditional crafts such as whittling, carving, basket weaving and wood turning. There is also the chance to carve your own pumpkin for Halloween at the lantern workshops (pumpkins £1 each), see cooking demonstrations on pumpkin recipes, and take part in the exciting garden Pumpkin Trail.

Artists in the Garden

Explore the delights on offer at RHS Garden Harlow Carr’s Artists in the Garden Exhibition. Between 22 October and 5 November local makers and artists will be at Harlow Carr’s Bath House, where you will be able to view and purchase the chosen disciplines on display, such as textiles, hand-made jewellery, ceramics and much more. You will also have the chance to meet the individual artists and discover how their work is produced.
