Look forward to summer colour

As the sun hopefully begins to shine more we can really start to look forward to the longer days and good weather ahead.

To ensure you have a lovely summer display for your garden you can get planting now. Summer-flowering bulbs are ready to go into the ground or into containers now. Make sure soil is well prepared, and there is enough drainage, or the bulbs will rot. Anemone coronaria tubers will benefit from well-drained soil. You can also start planning a continuous crop of cut flowers for the house – annuals and perennials such as delphiniums are good choices.

Fruits of your labours

Now is the time to get planting if you want to enjoy home-grown fruit. Popping out the back door to pick strawberries, or getting the grandchildren to pick the soft fruit is such a lovely thing to do in the summer. So what do you need to do now? Well, this is your last chance to get bare-rooted fruit trees in the ground – and if you have container-grown ones you should get them planted too. You can also get cold-stored strawberry runners in their beds and sow seeds for those lovely little alpine strawberries. And for something a bit different, choose to plant lingonberries and cranberries now too.
