Make more plants for free

The weather may be cooling and the days getting shorter but there is still lots to do in the garden. Here’s a few jobs for the beginning of the month.

  1. Divide herbaceous perennials – this is a great way to get new plants and revive existing ones. Use two garden forks back to back to pull the roots apart on larger plants.
  2. You can make more plants for free by collecting and sowing seed collected from hardy annuals and perennials.
  3. Now’s the time to plant any spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus and hyacinths. If your ground is very soggy and clay-filled you might prefer to plant your bulbs in containers using compost.

Jobs in the vegetable plot

There are plenty of jobs to be getting on with in the fruit and vegetable garden as well. You can harvest autumn raspberries, and remember to dig up your potatoes if you haven’t already. They are susceptible to slug attack if left in the ground. Leafy crops need netting to protect them from hungry birds and now is also the time to give greenhouses and cold frames a clean so that they are ready to be used over the autumn.

Wisley Flower Show

If you missed the major RHS flower shows, this is a late chance to enjoy a flower show in the beautiful setting of RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey. Opened by Great British Bake-Off judge and RHS ambassador Mary Berry, this informal show gives visitors the opportunity to get expert advice from the specialist nurseries and trade stands that will be part of the show. Floral displays from Surrey NAFAS are sure to impress, while the National Dahlia Society Annual Show will give a great insight into these autumn flowers.

West Country Craft Fair

Devon’s RHS Garden Rosemoor is hosting a craft fair with more than 40 crafts people based in the South West. The region, with its stunning range of landscapes, is an inspiration to many creative people, and this is your chance to support them by coming along, browsing the beautiful things they make, and perhaps taking something home for yourself or as a gift. A great chance to do some early Christmas shopping.
