November Gardening Tips from the RHS

With winter fast approaching and weather conditions taking a turn for the worse, this month is all about protection and prevention.

Remove any fallen leaves in the garden, from places such as beds, ponds and lawns; this is a job that will need to be done regularly. Vulnerable plants will need protection from falling temperatures and stormy gales – try moving these into a protected spot for shelter. Keep food and water topped up for birds as winter can be a hard time to find food.

Other jobs to consider this month are:

  1. Waterlogging can be a problem with containers, so it’s best to raise them up onto pot feet to prevent this from happening.

  2. This is the best time of year to consider your spring display – why not plant bulbs such as tulips in preparation?

  3. To prevent wind-rock from damaging your roses try pruning them back to ensure survival.

  4. Add something seasonal to the garden by planting out winter bedding.

  5. If your garden is suffering the blight of pigeons, use netting as a cover for brassicas.

Prepare and care for fruit and vegetables

This month the fruit and vegetables in the garden are not to be neglected. There is still work to be done in preparation, such as planting new fruit bushes and trees. It’s also a good time for digging up the roots of vegetables such as chicory, so they can be potted up ready to appear in a few weeks. Also there is time for planting cloves of garlic – make sure they are inside a cold frame and in modules or outside if you feel it’s suitable. Sowing and planting is a great way to keep an on-going selection of fruits and vegetables in the garden, however with the winter weather there are times when it’s best not to plant, such as if the ground is too frosty or wet.
