A rose by any other name…

Christmas rose (Helleborus niger) flowers can be spoiled by muddy rain splashes. Use a bark mulch to lessen this problem, and use cloches where possible.

This is also a good time to clear out any weeds in your beds, so that you can mulch in the spring. If the weather has been windy or stormy, remember to make sure your tender plants are still well protected – fleece and bubble wrap can easily blow away. Make sure you’ve cleared up all those old autumn leaves too – especially around plants such as Alpines that dislike the wet.

Trees – inside and out!

If it snows, make sure you brush it off the branches of shrubs, trees and conifers as the weight can break branches and ruin the shape of your tree. If you don’t want to deal with needle drop from your Christmas tree opt for a fir (Abies) or pine (Pinus) specimen as they are able to retain needles for a longer period. Keep them away from radiators or fires, and if you buy a cut tree stand it in a water-filled bucket or a stand that has a reservoir for water. Cut off a good couple of inches and the tree will be better able to absorb the water. If you want some of your holly berries for indoor decorations, use some netting to keep the birds off – do leave some for them though!
