As we retire and our families move away to start new adventures, you might find you have more time on your hands or want to expand your social circle to find people who share your interests and hobbies or have had similar life experiences that you can relate to.

Trying new things and joining clubs, societies and other groups is a great way to get out there and meet new people, but if you live in a rural area, have restricted mobility or don’t have access to the right transportation or opportunities to socialise in your community, it can be more difficult to connect with others in your age group.

Particularly for over 50s and 60s, the internet is a great way to combat loneliness and meet new friends. Chat rooms offer the opportunity to interact with others and talk about everything from your grandchildren to tips for your garden. The options are nearly endless – online there are thousands of chat rooms to choose from where you can connect with others and share a laugh.

Finding the right chat room for you

The most important thing to remember about chat rooms is that it’s up to you how much or how little you talk about, how long you talk for and what you say. While most high quality websites have checks in place to make sure there are no fake users, it’s important no matter who you’re speaking to or how much you feel you trust them never to share personal information in a chat room, for example your bank details or full address. Being mindful of your own personal safety and security will allow you to enjoy yourself and make the most of your time chatting to new friends.

If you have a special hobby or interest – gardening, collecting, art or literature for example – this is a great way to explore online chatting. Chat rooms with a very specific focus take some of the pressure off because instead of worrying about small talk, you can spend your time discussing the topics you love and connecting with people who share your passions. Once you’re more comfortable, chat rooms made specifically for seniors can help you meet people who you can share anecdotes about your interests, retirement and families with.

The best chat rooms for over 50s and 60s

Once you’re ready to dive into the world of online chatting all that’s left to do is find a chat room and sign up.

The online chat rooms at Age UK emphasise the importance of connecting with people for our general happiness, and are geared specifically at seniors, so you’ll be sure to find people in similar walks of life.

Similarly, the chat rooms on Buzz50 make it easy to find chats and discussion forums with other over 50s that interest you. Senior Chatters is another high quality chat website based in the UK, where you can go to chat, create personal blogs and take part in private chatting and private messaging as well as group forums.

To connect with a broader group of people of all ages and backgrounds who share your interests and passions, Yahoo Groups is a very popular service and is easy to use to discuss everything under the sun. Finally, if you’re looking to form offline relationships by meeting people online, try Meetup – this site is specifically designed to help you connect with people in your community to get together and try something new.

    • Hi Mick,
I am new to this type of thing, I ended up here because I was bored silly and I started playing around on my computer, I noticed your message on this site, and realised am in a similar situation to yourself insomuch that I am married, I enjoy ‘trying ‘ to play my guitar and I am 66 years old , I don’t get out walking a lot these days as my knees have given up on me! as a result I tend to drive everywhere. I do enjoy the odd pint, and going to theater. If you pick up this message, please confirm you have received it and I will write again,
      Cheers
