Viewing property online

They say that moving house is one of life’s most stressful experiences.

But actually finding a new home to move into can be very tricky too. Whether you’re looking for a new place to rent or a new house to buy, the search can be pressure-filled, time-consuming and tiring.

However, the rise of online property search sites has taken the pain away for many people around the UK. Long gone are the days when house-hunters were forced to scour the local classified ads every week. Now, you can simply log-on and see what’s out there in a few clicks.

Top property search websites

One of the UK’s most popular property search websites is Rightmove. This site contains listings for properties across the UK – so whether you’re moving across the country or simply across town, it’s a useful guide to what’s available. Start by entering a postcode, town or a landmark – for instance, a railway station or office block – near which you’d like to live. Then select whether you’d like to see properties to rent or for sale in this area, and results are presented to you in list form. Alternatively, if you prefer graphical tools, you can Draw-a-Search area on a map and discover the available properties in your desired region.

Head over to Zoopla, and you’ll also be able to search for properties for sale and to rent in counties all around the UK. This site, however, is great for finding property statistics. Want to know what your house might be worth if you decide to sell? Enter basic details about your home, including the property type, number of bedrooms, its condition and the year it was built, and Zoopla will give you an estimate. You can also browse average values for particular areas and find out house prices paid across the UK since 1995, so it’s great for helping to work out your budget.

PrimeLocation is a handy property search website too. Here, you’ll be able to search for homes for sale and to rent around the UK – but you can also include international properties in your search. PrimeLocation’s international listings are truly global, with properties everywhere from Puerto Rico to Thailand. So if you’re looking for an alternative to a Spanish retirement villa, this is the ideal place to start your search.

Local property expertise

Although UK-wide property sites have a fantastic range of listings to look at, it can sometimes be more helpful to turn to local expertise. There are over 30,000 Scottish properties to buy and rent at S1 Homes, for instance, and ESPC.com is an invaluable resource for people looking for new homes in East Central Scotland.

In Manchester, The Home’s Mine is a great place to look for properties in and around the city, and large estate agents like Foxton’s in London boast property listings in every corner of the capital. Classified sites like Gumtree are also becoming great places to look for property, especially for rental homes in large cities and towns around the UK.
