Over 50 and tired of travelling solo? Find holiday companions

image
Print Friendly

Sometimes, a holiday can be a wonderful chance to escape alone with your own thoughts, dreams and desires. Other times, there’s nothing better than sharing your experiences with a friend or new acquaintance.

If you’re fed up with travelling solo and you’d like to meet other like minded people, check out some great online resources for finding travelling companions. Get ready to start your next holiday adventure with a new friend in tow.

Finding someone to share your travels with

Lonely is the last way you want to feel on your holiday, and luckily there are plenty of ways to make sure that you don’t have to. Delve into a few great websites that are dedicated to helping you get in touch with the perfect travelling companion and look forward to your next trip.

Sign up to My Travel Companions – also known as myTC – and you’ll have the chance to meet hundreds of people over 50 who’re keen to find a travelling companion. The site caters to intrepid travellers from all over the world and makes it very easy for you to search potential companions. There are also some handy holiday resources and a forum that’s perfect if you have any questions about the process or the way things work.

You can also sign up to social networking sites such as Travel Buddies, although you’ll find a much higher proportion of young travellers looking for friends there. Another resource that’s worth a look is Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree Forum, where you’ll find a wide variety of different individuals posting their holiday plans and looking to see if anyone would like to join them.

A travelling companion can be a wonderful thing but if you’d also love the chance to meet someone who’d like a little more than simple friendship, Silverfriends could help you find your perfect match. Simply fill in a profile for yourself – don’t forget to mention how much you enjoy travelling – and start searching through the many potential new friends and companions already on the site.

Making the most of your holidays

There are some types of holidays that are also particularly good for offering you opportunities to meet new people – perfect if you’re not able to find a suitable companion before you go. Have a look at package holidays designed to give guests time to mingle and make new friends or consider booking a cruise. With shared dining, workshops and classes, nightly entertainment and frequent excursions, cruises are great for encouraging conversations and new friendships. See if there are any suitable cruise deals available right now.

Before you set out on your holiday, you’ll also want to make sure you have the best possible over 50s travel insurance in place. Have a look at our guide to finding the right travel insurance and be sure you’re covered no matter where your travels take you.

Enjoy holidays you’ll never forget – find a new friend to share them with you.

Hi I am 71 and travelling to Lisbon over Christmas and going on to Madeira for the whole of January 2017. I'm pretty fit and plan to do some walking. It would be good to find some companions to share some meals and maybe some walks. I'm easygoing and interested in lots of things - music, books, cinema, personal life experiences, travel, humour, media etc... I think my outlook is quite youthful. I'm self-sufficient in lots of ways and content with my own company, but interested to meet new friends. Please contact me if you'd like to meet up in Lisbon (Dec 19 - 29) or in Funchal fromega 30 Dec - 31 Jan. [email protected]

Hi, I have just joined this site. I am a lady in my 50s, love dancing, food and badminton. My husband died 4 years ago and I want to travel the world as we had planned. I love cruising. Would like to find a female fellow traveller, but would want to meet up and get to know each other before travelling. Going to Dubai and Australia this year with my daughter but no plans yet for 2017. I live south Manchester, near Wilmslow. Anyone fancy getting in touch?

I live in California in the USA, I travel to Europe twice a year (spring & fall) to visit young (18-month) twin grandchildren, either to London or Munich or Dalmatia. I like a week with the boys, then 7-10 days personal vacation. Baltic cruise, Ireland or Scotland are on my bucket list. Last few visits have included Cuba, Cairo, Sarajevo, Zagreb, Dubrovnik. 74 years old, widowed for 12+ years, like being a bachelor, but enjoy female company. Financially very comfortable, German speaking, somewhat serious duplicate bridge player, reasonably physically active.

Hi, This is completely new to me! Would love to meet up with like minded fellow travel Companions to see more of the world, so far I have visited many places, my last trip being Costa Rica and Panama.

I spend most of my time in Southern Spain but when in UK Norfolk where I was brought up.

I am female, divorced, slim, fit and well for my 70years, animal lover, enjoy reading, Theatre, bit if a foodie equally at home in Wellies or evening wear. Would love to meet interesting travel companion with a sense of humour and adventure to explore more together.

On my bucket list, Scandinavian Countries, Southern India, Sri Lanka, anywhere that we would both find of interest. I am not well off but like to travel in comfort, dine with the locals, not into Hostels or backpacking, enjoy staying at small family run interesting places, would be more upmarket I'm sure if my finances allowed me this luxury.

If your mature but not mouldy like me, would love to hear from you.

I am looking for someone to travel to USA with, male or female. My plan is to fly to Chicago and then take the Amtrak train to LA then drive to San Francisco . The return journey would be similar but ending in New York.
My dates are very flexible and I would like to travel with someone who is of similar age (63) or younger. It would be a fun trip covering a lot of miles.
Anyone interested?

Hi. I am wanting to travel extensively, rail travel, bus, backpacking, renting vehicles/motorcycle, hostels, couchsurfing, camping. I enjoy backcountry hiking, day hiking, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, biking, skiing. I would love to travel with a like minded person. Prefer a female, or group of male and female. If it is a male, absolutely no romantic intentions. I would love to bike the Camino Santiago, backpack Central/South America, hike Ireland/Scotland, explore Eastern Europe, SE Asia, Australia and New Zeland.

Am looking for travel mate to share car hire/drive US East Coast north from Miami to Washington/New York from 7 May this year. Was about to book Amtrak pass for 15 days as none of my Aussie friends were available or interested but thought I'd throw the net wider for a co-driver as I prefer the flexibility of a car - but not lone driving! I want to visit some of the historic southern & coastal cities (Savannah, Charleston etc) but also go inland to the Blue Ridge Parkway/Great Smoky Mountains & some seminal US music cities & civil rights sites. I'm sailing/snorkelling in the Caribbean for a week before flying into Miami & will have already been to New Orleans. Want to do the trip north over 10 days/2 weeks & am meeting a friend from Spain in New York for a similar time before flying back to Australia on 1 June 2016. Please contact me on this site if interested.

I'd love to travel around the UK with someone who can show me all the great, out-of-the-way spots. I've been to all the tourist spots and now I want to see all the hidden treasures of the British Islands. I'd love to find someone who has an RV (caravan) and wants to travel around seeing the sights. I'm a teacher so I have my summers free. I'd like to travel light, hit campgrounds and see the real cities and towns of the UK. I'm looking for a travel companion (male or female) who wants to just set out and explore! I can pay half expenses but want to keep things as inexpensive as possible. I've love to stay about a month.

I'm hoping to see Venice this year, if I can just find the right person/people to travel with. I usually have short city breaks with BA as they've never let me down so far, but am struggling to find someone to travel with on this occasion, as everyone I know has already been and I would never consider travelling alone. It would be lovely if I could link up with a group of people to travel with, the more the merrier so far as I'm concerned. I'm based in the West Midlands but usually fly from Heathrow.

It hit me like a train just yesterday when a long time niggling itch to see the world (and I mean the world), always worthy of contemplating, when it dawned on me that others, like me, may have the same urge but felt inhibited and daunted by the magnitude of such an undertaking entirely on their own. Without wishing to appear to be prostituting myself I can see a niche for individuals to finally cast off a need to be anchored to their 'world' and yet feel secure enough to do that journey with like-minded people. Does anybody else see the canvas rolling down and a need to peek below it before it blanks out the limelight?

Hi i am a young 56 yr old woman who has discovered the world of cruising. Unfortunately the single suppliments on these trips make it impossible to go alone.I am looking for someone who may be interested in cruising and would like to share the costs of the accommodation to make this possible,no strings attatched.
I prefer non fly cruises leaving from the UK and long trips.
I have found 2 which are interesting one for 40days leaving in Nov2016 or another for 50days leaving Jan2017.
Is there anyone who may be interested in either?
If not this time anyone who may be interested for future cruises please get in touch.

I am a retired school teacher and am planning to explore this beautiful country while I can. I have lived and traveled all over the world. Is there anyone who may be interested in road trips as a group during the summer months in Australia.
I drive with my two small dogs and camp along the way. I used to tow a camper van but these days I travel lighter with a small vehicle and tent. I am free to plan a trip to where ever you may like to go. I am based in the Blue Mountains ( Sydney NSW)

I love to travel! Esp by train. My wife, however, does not. So sometimes, I like to dream about train trips I'd love to take. But I'm "of a certain age" and it's no longer practical to take some of the trips I fantasize about, alone.

I've always wanted to ride the Trans-Siberian Express. And I've got this (ridiculous?) idea that I'd like to be able to say I've gone from London to Hong Kong by train! It's feasible, by the way. But of course I can't and won't do it alone. So I'm thinking about trying to find someone else who might also consider some of the outlandish foreign train trips I've always wanted to take, such as this one. I'd like to think about doing this sometime late summer or fall in 2016. It's pricey but it's within my reach.

I'm in my 70s, retired professional, well educated, seriously into classical music/opera, art, history, natural scenery, etc., when traveling. And trains--did I mention that?

I've just signed up to this forum, and I'm not sure how to use it. I assume if someone wants to reply, it'll be here, so I'll check back from time to time to see if anyone has taken an interest in my (preposterous?) idea.

Hmmm. There are not many men who are seriously interested in adventure travel, classical music and opera.

I am passionate about classical music and opera and have been for most of my life. I am also passionate about travelling the world and have doing so or 50 years, much of it alone.

Have two degrees, multicultural, speak fluent french and german.
I am also diabetic, type 2.

I have often thought about the Trans-Siberian rail but have hesitated because of the unknown bed and food situations.

What train trips have you done?

Please tell me more about yourself, in particular your profession and where you live.

As a former international teacher I have been able to enjoy a bit of travelling --mostly alone --over the years and would like to travel over to the far east and eventually N.Z.with a like minded person .M or F. Normally take my camera and do a bit of web-blogging and enjoy the unexpected aspects of the natural world.---sorry --not into museums and tours. Can be away for weeks or months---no time limits

Hello Gerry. I too am a school teacher, and, like you am limited by school holidays and a teacher (limited) budget. I have never sought a travel companion before, but my wife is Polish and goes back there every summer. I am at a point in life were I can travel more freely, and to be honest, I have no desire to go to Poland. I have been there once.

I would like to visit Belize, and just spend time relaxing, exploring the Mayan ruins and rain forests as well as the other sites of the country. But, most of all I just want to relax and have a nice time.

I hope to hear back from you, and please feel free to ask me any questions you wish, or share any of your travel ideas or interests.

Who would like to see New England in the Fall ( autumn in British English of course) ? I am planning a 10 day to two week trip seeing various locations on the Eastern seaboard of the USA. I am flexible about whether it will be economy accommodation hotels ( even 2 to share hostels) or self catering. I want to travel around by train as I will see more.
I am a fit 60 year old who likes walking, music and singing and I am a good cook ( so I am told anyway) . I am a trained nurse and an easy going type

I look forward to hearing from you
I live in West Hertfordshire, about 20 miles north of London

I am looking for someone who likes cruising who would be willing to travel together but in separate cabins. I am outgoing & consider myself very friendly. I just don't enjoy travelling alone.

I retired at 50 and now travel the world using 'home exchanging'. My wife has found travelling 11 months out of 12 for the past 7 years 'a bit too much' so l am now looking for a travel companion(s) who want to explore the world.

My next big trip travelling solo is to Shanghai (China) from 1st December 2015 until 31st January 2016 (inclusive). I am looking for a like minded travel companion.

Dear wanderer
I unfortunately am not retired but am still working as a teacher. I am interested in going to China for Christmas and was wondering if we could meet up and keep each other company. You didn't specify male or female so I'm assuming it doesn't matter.
Kind regards.

Hi Geraldine, I would be quite interested in China for Christmas. How long do you plan on going for ? Would definitely prefer to travel with a female. I usually travel alone but think it's always more rewarding to travel with someone who appreciates the same things.
Kind regards
Sylvia

Looking for a travel companion. I am an adventurous person who loves to hike as well as train travel and like to push the boundaries and go out of my comfort zone occasionally.
Am open to new places and ideas for travel. I am retired so not restricted.

Hello Mags62 ... take a look at our Escorted Tours section: https://www.silversurfers.com/travel/escorted-tours/ Wendy Wu Tours are exceptionally good for escorted tours to both China and India. Also Cox & Kings offer a range of escorted trips for the single traveler and this link should also be helpful: https://www.silversurfers.com/travel/destination-features/top-5-wonders-world/ 🙂

For the past ten years I have travelled the world with companions with companions from two travel groups which have either closed down or appear likely to do so. Through these I have found many friends and travel companions of both sexes.
I hope that joining Silversurfers will enable me to continue doing so.

Hi Mags, Thanks for your message - I'm not sure where about you live, but I'm close to Chester. I'm 58 years old and I enjoy gardening, cooking, crafts, countryside, seaside, music, animals, walking and going to new places. I'm looking to travel in the UK or a short cruise, or even a few days away somewhere like Portugal, Spain, Italy?
Best wishes

Hi, Your readers may also be interested in togetherfriends.com, my friendship website for women in the UK. Lots of women over 50 have joined the site who are looking to broaden their social circle. They are looking for companions for coffee, walks, sport, travel etc. Many of them have recently retired, are divorced, widowed, or have moved to a new area. Lack of a travel companion is a big issue for women on their own.
