7 fun and easy snacks to make with the grandchildren during the summer holidays

Keep hungry little ones busy with these homemade treats

If you’re stuck for summer holiday activity inspiration, it might be time to get the grandchildren into the kitchen.

Creating these speedy snacks together will entertain and feed them, whatever their age or attention span:

1. Pitta pizza

Tired out from a day at the beach? Get the whole family to help make dinner. All you need is a pitta per person, a bottle of ketchup for the tomato base, and then an array of toppings – try onion, sweetcorn, pineapple, ham, sausage, pepper – for the kids to choose from. Let them pile up whatever they want on their personal pitta, before covering the lot with grated cheddar. Just grill until the cheese is bubbling, then cut into wedges and serve with salad. Doddle!

2. Chocolate crispy cakes

Chocolate crispy cakes

Rice crispies or cornflakes, stirred through melted milk chocolate, maybe a spoonful of golden syrup and a sprinkling of coconut, then an hour in the fridge – mmm. Rice crispy cakes are classics for a reason. The whole family can get high on sugar making these crunchy little cakes – just put Smarties on top to finish them off!

3. Smores

Smored out !!! #sugaroverload

So easy, so indulgent. Either crank up the barbecue, or go all out and set up camp in the garden with tents, blankets and your own fire pit, then melt marshmallows on skewers. When they’re suitably molten and caramelised, squish the mallows between two chocolate digestives (chocolate facing inwards so it melts too). The kids will be totally blissed out – and covered in chocolate.

4. Cheese scones

If you’re spending the holidays in Cornwall and Devon and have already worked your way through a few too many creams teas, you’ll be ready to switch to cheese scones. Quick to bake, they make a great supper for little ones and a tasty snack for the adults. Try this recipe from AllRecipes – and don’t scrimp on the butter when they’re hot out of the oven.

5. Fresh fruit ice lollies

Dig out your ice lolly moulds from the cupboard, fill a few jugs with a selection of fruit juices and fizzy drinks (we’d totally mix orange juice with a bit of lemonade), and then chop up a mixture of fruit – watermelon, kiwi, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries all look and taste great once frozen. Then let the kids put together their own popsicles – just make sure you have enough space in the freezer for all their icy creations.

6. Rock cakes

Rock Cakes

These take less than half an hour to whip up and cook, so the kids won’t have to wait too long to tuck into these crumbly, raisiny buns. Try BBC Good Food’s super simple recipe – and you can swap out the raisins for cranberries for a bit of colour.

7. Homemade lemonade

Get the kids to cool down with some delicious homemade lemonade. Grab a jug or pitcher, pop in the juice of two lemons, 200g of sugar, and then top up with chilled water (sparkling if you want a bit of fizz) and ice. The kids can add sprigs of mint and lemon balm from the garden too for added pizzazz. Selling it in paper cups to passersby in the front garden? Optional.

What do you like to cook with your grandchildren?
