There are several reasons why January is a popular time to make a new will. It could be that the Christmas break has given you an opportunity to reflect on what’s important to you. Or it could be that you and your loved ones have come closer together over Christmas, even if coronavirus restrictions meant you were unable to get together in person.

Is your New Year’s resolution to make a will?

Whatever reason you have for getting your affairs in order in 2021, it’s important to have a valid will that you keep up to date, to make sure it’s still an accurate reflection of your wishes. If you don’t have a valid will in place, you have no control over who will inherit your money, property, possessions or even your pets after you die. Instead, the law will decide who gets what under inheritance laws called the rules of intestacy. This might not align with what you would have wanted and could cause upset and disagreements for those left behind.

It’s a good idea to read over your will after any significant life event, such as the birth of a child or grandchild, moving house, ending a relationship or starting a new one, because any of these events can impact how you’d like to distribute your estate after you die. It’s also important to note that getting married and getting divorced can both directly affect the terms of your will, so after either of these events you’ll need to check whether your will is still effective and whether it’s still a true reflection of your wishes. If it isn’t, you should make a new will as soon as possible.

As a Silversurfers member, as well as benefitting from a £25 discount on will writing services, you can also access a wealth of free digital tools to help you understand wills, including how the different types of wills work and what level of protection is right for your circumstances.
