How to check a charity is genuine and stop contact if you don’t want to donate

Charities generate support for their work in many ways through fundraising campaigns.

When people are contacted with a fundraising ask by email, post, text or telephone they tend to be very generous.

If you want to give, there are some simple checks you can do to feel reassured the ask is genuine. However, you may not want to hear from some charities, even if you have donated to them in the past, and this is where the Fundraising Preference Service may be able to help you.

Whether you want to donate or would prefer to stop contact, the Fundraising Regulator has some top tips to help you give safely and manage the communications you receive from charities.

Check a charity is registered

Most charities with an annual income of £5,000 or more must be registered under charity law. Look out for the registered charity number on any fundraising materials and search the register of charities held by the Charity Commission for England and Wales or the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland to confirm the details you have are genuine.

Look out for the Fundraising Badge

To check a charity is committed to ethical fundraising, look out for the Fundraising Badge, the logo that shows an organisation is registered with the Fundraising Regulator. You can also look the organisation up in the regulator’s online Directory.

The Fundraising Regulator is the independent regulator of charitable fundraising in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Organisations who are registered with the regulator commit to uphold good fundraising practices that protect donors.

Use the FPS if you don’t want to be contacted

If you or someone you know is receiving unwanted fundraising asks, there is a free and easy to use service that can help you put an end to this contact – the Fundraising Preference Service (FPS).

The FPS is the UK’s only service that allows you to manage contact preferences from all registered charities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. You can access the FPS online or by phone. It’s completely free to use and is run securely by the Fundraising Regulator.

Although you could contact each charity you receive contact from directly to ask them to stop sending you fundraising communications, using the FPS means you don’t need to. Instead, you can use the service to end contact with more than one charity at once – all you need to know is the charity names or registered charity numbers.

More than 10,000 people have used the FPS to put a stop to marketing contact from charities and many people have used it on behalf of a friend or family member.
