What will the Green Party do for you?

image

We asked the Green Party what their manifesto offered Silversurfers, and here are some key policies affecting the over 50s:

Free Social Care for the over 65s

The policy includes the provision of residential care, home care and home adaptations. It would cost an additional £7billion in 2015, rising to £9billion a year by 2020. It would be paid for by a proportion of the revenue raised from new taxes on wealth and financial transactions and by cracking down on tax avoidance.

Citizens’ Pension

The Green Party have set out plans for a universal Citizens’ pension, paid to all regardless of contribution record, so no pensioner will live in poverty. This would be introduced in 2016.

Employment

Create a million good public sector jobs

Make the minimum wage a living wage to reach £10 per hour by 2020

Equal treatment for older people in employment: “ambition should not be shut off just because we get older”

End exploitative zero hours contracts

Prioritise training in the skills needed to build a low carbon economy – energy efficient design and building, renewable energy. This training would also help end employment discrimination and enable older people to enter new sectors.

Energy efficient housing / Fuel poverty

A free nationwide retrofit insulation programme, concentrating on areas where fuel poverty is most serious, designed to insulate 9 million homes in total

New homes to be built to very high energy efficiency standards

Keep the Winter Fuel Allowance

Caroline Lucas, Green Party MP, has been a leading advocate, as joint chair of Parliament’s cross party group on ending fuel poverty and promoting energy efficiency, of urgent action to end the scandal of cold homes and high fuel bills.

In what way are the Greens trying to save the planet by increasing Child Benefit and saying that family size is up to individuals! More people = less room for other life forms. More people = more consumption of power/fuel which is destroying the climate. More people = more traffic.

Lots of fluffy ideas about how to spend our money and nothing on how to generate more of it!

Getting 15% of the vote is an excellent start for a relatively young party. It would guarantee at least the Green voice is heard in Parliament. The people of Swindon for instance now have a Green candidate in every council ward and have given everyone in the town a chance to vote for them.

Whilst their manifesto is really something we should all aspire to it is no different from the other parties manifesto's in so much that the contents are all just promised scenarios based on dreams. The reality is there is no money to do these things as previous governments have drained the kitty dry. Couple that with the fact that a large proportion of the British public, despite their moaning and groaning, don't like change and feel safer with what they know.
That said I WILL VOTE FOR THE GREEN PARTY.

I believe that we should have more parties like the Greens, in that, i am sick of the traditional parties and can't distinguish between their Thatcherite policies - same tired, old policies by privileged, upper class men. We need some unique, out of the box, forward thinking to move this country on. The world has changed and we have got to keep up.

I don't know what their policies are apart from saving the environment. They should focus on that and nothing else. After all thats one of the most critical things we all need to focus on. Clean air, water and no pollution-thats what we all want.

I would say that they know only too well how government works and want to change the system. Apart from the obvious ecological and environmental side to their politics, they want a fair deal for all and not just for the 1%. Not sure what in-fighting you're talking about either.

I like the idea of the Green Party. We should all get on the environmental platform asap or we will destroy the planet.
