Freedom and confidence for colostomates

Helen is a flushable freedom advocate

Helen is 69 and lives in Port Talbot, near Swansea in Wales. Her philosophy is to live life to the full and enjoy it as much as possible. She’s maintained this philosophy her whole life, even through various health problems, including Crohn’s Disease and the need to have a colostomy.

A stoma is an opening on the surface of the abdomen which has been surgically created to divert bodily waste into an external pouch. It is estimated that 13,000 people undergo stoma surgery each year, with almost 1 in 500 people in the UK currently living with a stoma.¹

Coming to terms with having a stoma can be difficult, but Helen has discovered ‘flushable freedom’ with the Aura Flushable colostomy pouch. The beauty of the Aura Flushable colostomy range is that they can be flushed in domestic toilets, helping to make the disposal process much easier. The first time Helen used a flushable pouch she quickly got the hang of how to use it and now considers it a must-have. She no longer worries about her pouch and is reaping the benefits.

“To me, freedom means security. Feeling secure and happy in your surroundings. I have tried other pouches and have never felt quite as comfortable going out as I do with the flushables.”

As someone who likes to get out and enjoy life, Aura Flushable has given Helen the confidence to continue to do the things that make her happy. She loves visiting friends and family and travelling abroad on holiday. It’s during these times when she relies on a quick, easy and discreet pouch change.

“If you’re a person who wants to go out and live your life as best you can with what you’ve got, I think flushables are much simpler to give you the confidence to do that.”

Helen, like many others, has found security and confidence in the Aura Flushable range. As part of the Freedom To Be campaign, eight colostomates have taken the time to share their stories with us, so we can better understand what it is that makes the Aura Flushable range so important to them.
