Over 50s ‘should have more sex to boost their IQ’

Forget the Sudoku and Crosswords!

Today we are waking up to the latest findings undertaken by researchers from the universities of Oxford and Coventry, who found people who want to keep their brain sharp as they enter their twilight years should be having sex — and the more the better.

Those who engaged in more regular sexual activity scored higher on tests that measured their verbal fluency and their ability to visually perceive objects and the spaces between them.

Study leader Dr Hayley Wright, of Coventry University, said:

“People don’t like to think that older people have sex – but we need to challenge this conception at a societal level and look at what impact sexual activity can have on those aged 50 and over, beyond the known effects on sexual health and general wellbeing.”

A group of 73 people aged 50 to 83 took part in a series of tests for the study and were also asked to complete a questionnaire about how often they were sexually active.

The tests included tasks such as naming as many animals as possible or as many words beginning with a certain letter and drawing a clock face from memory.

Researchers found that the ones who had the most sex scored highest in the tests.

This study, published in The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological and Social Sciences, expanded on previous research from last year, which found that older adults who were sexually active scored higher on cognitive tests than those who were not sexually active. But this time the research looked more specifically at the impact of the frequency of sexual activity, for example whether it makes a difference how often you engage in sexual activity, and also used a broader range of tests to investigate different areas of cognitive function.

What are your views about this research? Will it make you change your habits?

Different circumstances for a lot of people here and not just over 50. Some couples or individuals may have a work distance between them if still working, or other responsibilities, or life obstacles that mean time to physically share fulfilling relationships is not always on the agenda, but self gratification doesn't have to be off the cards for anyone whatever the age. Yes, aging is a factor in our bodily functions and certainly not like it was in our heyday, but never underestimate the power of our brains with or without regular sex to perform cognitive tests that are assuming we are past it.
Get up and go and use it don't lose it.
Love life to the full and hold life with both hands.

I have not let my dear wife see this or she would be making so many jokes about how dumb yours truly is and would be in laughter convulsions on the floor. No best to keep quiet about this one folks!

Aaaah, I do love the assumptions that research like this makes about older folk's capabilities! If my partner was able to raise anything more than a smile I'd have the chance to see if their findings are right
*sigh*
hey ho, back to knitting, tv and memories

Well there's a headline I never expected to see..lol, one wonders though if they took into account that with advancing years the mind seems to have a habit of writing cheques the body can no longer cash!:-)

I am all in favour of having more sex and general cuddles but who with? This research probably makes sense as happier people and busier folk will generally be more switched on. Thats what I see among friends the highly switched on older folk have very busy lives and lots of hobbies. I must ask a few "Silver surfers" mates down the pub who think they are clever if its because they have having lots of nookie? After a few pints I can imagine some of the banter.

After a few pints most men are useless in bed...drunk sex is worse than no sex..so when your beer swilling mates tell you they aren't getting nookie it will be because their partners don't desire them in that state 😉

To be fair PatsiR with the looks and profile of some of them I am not surprised their wives are not interested. The term "beer belly" is appropriate for most of them and some are so fat they look pregnant! I agree with your comments and with an average of 6 pints in a night at the pub it all adds to their undesirability.

I would agree I need to have more "sex" but when I look at my husband and the state of him it just doesn't seem a good idea. Now if he looked like George Clooney.......oh well we can all dream.....
