Don’t let age be a barrier to your health and well-being

As we mature in age, our minds, outlook, behaviour and bodies mature too.

It becomes easier to put on a bit of weight and it becomes harder to take it off again. The very thought of going down the gym and exercising in full view of the ‘younger set’ is not something that appeals. We understand that exercise is vital to stave off the many medical problems that unfortunately are statistically more likely to happen to us as we grow older, but what can we do about it? What are our options?

Well really there are only two:

  1. Carry on eating and drinking more than we should and bury our heads in the sand in the belief that nothing bad is going to happen to us.
  2. Take the necessary actions to help us enjoy life in a fit and healthy fashion.

By choosing option 2 we are not sacrificing a glass of wine or a cream cake, but we are making the conscious choice to ‘cut down a little’, to take small steps towards better health. The first small step we can implement is to take a daily vitamin tablet to help ensure we are taking on board some of the good things our bodies need. We may even replace the odd meal with a protein shake, so that we don’t feel so guilty when we go out for a sumptuous dinner (chicken chasseur is so much more satisfying when it doesn’t come with a side of “oh but I shouldn’t”).

The next thing we can tackle is exercise. Although we go for walks, it is rare that we go at a pace that really raises the heart rate. In fact from the end of September to the middle of March, the weather combined with dark mornings and early sunsets really prevent us from doing much exercise at all. We are full of good intentions to do a bit more exercise, but it is not very appealing when it’s so cold you can’t feel your toes!

No need to worry, The Cardio Shop has you covered when it comes to indoor, gentle, feel-good exercise. Here is a suggested plan for the new healthy and fitter you:

  1. Buy yourself a foot massager. It will relieve tension and stress, which in turn will reduce fatigue, thus leaving you with a great feeling of well-being and with a mind-set ready to tackle some exercise equipment.
  2. Next, get yourself onto a vibration machine. It will help tone you up with just a few short sessions. The vibration machines are easy to use, and they do most of the work for you (plus they’re great fun)! The Cardio Shop Vibration Plate will take up very little room in the house but will have a big impact on your health.
  3. Now you need to add some cardio exercise to raise the heart rate and improve your lung capacity. This means a treadmill, a bike or a rowing machine. If you’ve followed the steps above then you are ready for these machines now; you will be able to enjoy using them almost as much as you will enjoy the results!

Don’t forget to keep taking your daily vitamin tablets and remember to drink a protein shake every time you skip a meal – your body needs protein and vitamins to fuel it on the road to enjoying better health.

Finally, if by this point you find that your new routine has unearthed your inner fitness fiend, why not treat yourself to a core muscle piece of equipment? Honestly, core strengthening equipment will really make your muscles work, and as such may elicit the occasional groan, but 10 – 20 minutes of use a few times a week will strengthen your whole body and help to keep age-related diseases and muscle weakening at bay. Go on, now you can have the chocolate éclair – you’ve earned it!
