5 top tips on how to age gracefully for the 50+’s
There’s not many of us who wouldn’t love to look and feel younger.
Whilst ageing is inevitable and genetics influences how we age, there’s a lot of things we have control over when it comes to slowing down the process. From diet and exercise to sun exposure and stress management, here are our top tips for how to age gracefully.
1. Practice safe sun exposure
Sun exposure is a key factor in ageing. Whilst getting some sun on your skin is important to obtain sufficient vitamin D, UV rays can contribute to wrinkles and pigmentation. Therefore, make sure you protect your skin with an SPF when you spend time outside, even on a cloudy day.
2. Get regular exercise
We can’t sing the praises of regular exercise enough! It can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases associated with ageing, including heart disease, as well as provide you with a youthful glow. Official guidelines suggest healthy adults get 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week.
3. Manage stress
Stress management is vital if you’re looking to slow the ageing process. Guided mediation apps, breathing exercises and stretching can be useful. We also love yoga; not only is it very relaxing, it also counts towards your weekly exercise target!
4. Eat the rainbow
Nutrition plays massive role in how the body ages. For example, evidence suggests antioxidant pigments accumulate in the skin and provide a protective effect against the sun. Aim to eat a variety of coloured fruit and vegetables to maximise your intake. For creative inspiration regarding how you can do this, have a look at this chocolate mousse recipe!
5. Focus on protein
Muscle mass naturally decreases with age so maintaining what you have via exercise and adequate protein intake is important. However, many of us don’t consume enough protein, especially at breakfast. Therefore, try to find delicious ways to boost your intake in the morning: for example, make yourself an omelette or give this colourful porridge recipe a go
