The World’s first 100% compostable mask

Stroll down the street, go for a jog in the park or walk the dog on the beach and there they are – discarded, disposable face masks.

A hideous blot on the landscape you can’t fail to miss them, trodden into the mud, billowing from trees and bushes, washed up on our shorelines or floating in our rivers and canals.

It’s estimated 1.6 billion masks a month are being dumped nationwide.  Shocking to think that’s enough to blanket London in two days.

Henosis Masks is an innovative Yorkshire based company that is helping to redress the blight littering our environment, by producing the world’s first 100% compostable mask.

But what does that really mean?

Opting to use a Henosis Mask means using a plant-based product, made from biodegradable polylactic acid and has no petrol based additives.  These eco-friendly 3-ply masks are 100% compostable and do not emit any toxic by-products when discarded through any of our regular waste disposal services.

Cheap, on-line imports might look tempting, but they contain microplastics that can take up to 400 years to break down, plus there’s the carbon footprint of getting them to your home.

But with this revolutionary compostable mask you can discard it in your waste bin and even if it ends up in landfill, it will disintegrate in 12 months.

And the company have taken great effort to ensure all the materials are sourced in the UK.

Brian and his business partner Mark Bennett ran a successful printing company at their factory in Leeds, West Yorkshire, but when Covid 19 hit, they were, like so many in the UK, forced to diversify.

‘Ninety-five per cent of our clients worked in the hospitality and events sector which meant lockdowns and restrictions had a devastating knock-on effect for all of us.

‘Commercially, we knew we had to do something quickly.   So, with our manufacturing skillsets, we decided to try and develop a product that would not only help us survive financially but would be an integral part of helping people to feel and stay safe, without destroying the environment,’ says Brian.

Henosis Masks meet UN Sustainable Development Goals and the company is supporting vital employment opportunities in Yorkshire.  It is hoped that the business will employ an additional 60 staff throughout 2021 as their product and business develops.

Brian says: ‘It’s not so long ago that plastic bags were the scourge of our nation.  Birds would mistake them for food while fish ate thousands of tons of plastic every year, filling their stomach with toxic debris.

‘Ironically, just as the UK was reported to be winning the war on plastic, the pandemic struck and now threatens to reverse the country’s hard-fought progress.

‘Environmental issues are a concern to all of us, young and old, and we’re incredibly proud to have produced an ecologically-friendly face mask which can not only save lives as we navigate our way out of the pandemic, but will help our planet too,’ adds Brian.

This one is for the Editor Sally! Great piece about these masks, have you ordered any for yourself? I ordered on the back of what you wrote on 1.5.2021. I am still waiting, 2 emails down the line. Have any of your readers had the same problem?
