5 things to consider when buying a mobility scooter
Choosing which scooter to buy is an important decision as the right one could make such a positive impact on your life. With so many models on the market it can get confusing so Betterlife from LloydsPharmacy’s independent living expert, Michael Sandland recommends asking yourself the following five questions.
Do you need it for the shopping?
If you want to take your scooter on a shopping trip, choose one that is compact and easy to manoeuvre but also mounts pavements without difficulty. A mounted basket is also a fab feature as you can store your shopping in it for the journey home.
Will it need to fit in your car?
You will probably find that wherever you go, you will want your scooter to come too. You will have a great sense of freedom that you won’t want to lose, particularly if you go on holiday or make plans to visit friends and family! If you travel by car a lot, choose a mobility scooter that will fit in the boot. Some models break apart into lightweight pieces making them perfect both for storing and transporting.
Is this going to be a car replacement?
If you are looking for a car replacement, it is important to choose your scooter accordingly. Opt for a road legal model, which will be larger and especially stable. There are different speed limits for roads (8mph) and pavements (4mph), so you’ll probably want a scooter that travels a little faster too. It should also have important features such as LED lighting to illuminate the road and full front and rear suspension for a smooth ride.
Where you will be using it
If you live in a rural area you will probably want similar features to that of a car replacement scooter. A larger model will have a bigger battery life, allowing you to travel further and reach up to 8mph so you arrive at your destination swiftly. Additionally, comfortable back seats make for a comfortable ride even when driving over bumpy terrain.
