Action on Hearing Loss’ myth-busting guide to tinnitus

Tinnitus can be hard to live with. People who suffer with the characteristic and persistent ringing or buzzing inside the ear or head say it plays havoc with sleep and concentration, making life, work and even leisure stressful.

But don’t despair. Action on Hearing Loss, while determinedly seeking a cure for tinnitus, has many products specifically designed to help the one in 10 people in the UK who live with the condition.

This week is National Tinnitus Week and Action on Hearing Loss (formerly RNID), the UK’s largest deafness and hearing loss charity, know it’s the ideal time to highlight how to manage the condition, which affects 12% of people in their sixties and 25-30% of the over-70s. And management is the key word here. Tinnitus can be managed – modern, but simple-to-use technology helps enormously with day-to-day life, as will their ‘managing tinnitus guide’ below.

If you’re worried you might have tinnitus, read this Action on Hearing Loss myth-busting guide to the condition and visit your GP. Remember, you’re not alone and it’s good to talk – or type! Use our Tinnitus Forum or call the Helpline on 0808 808 666to get advice and support – and to share tips and coping strategies.

If you have tinnitus:

No night-time tipple

Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks late at night – no matter how tempting

Relocation and distraction

If tinnitus is keeping you awake do something diverting – make a hot milky (decaffeinated) drink or have a warm bath

Soothing sounds

Some people find gentle, soothing music a useful distraction, especially when trying to sleep

Stress and anxiety

We all know that stress is bad for us and it can affect tinnitus. Breathing exercises, yoga, meditation and even complementary therapies are great stress-relievers

Holistic health

Treat your body as a temple and take an holistic approach to health and lifestyle – improving your general health, diet and exercise regime can alleviate symptoms
