The last five years has seen a significant rise in the number of people that use e cigarettes, with around 400 different brands of electronic cigarettes currently available on the market.
This has led to several concerns, one of which is that e-cigarettes are just as addictive as tobacco cigarettes.
However, a recent study conducted by Jonathon Foulds, the Professor of Public Health Science and Psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine, ‘ found that e-cigarettes appear to be less addictive than tobacco cigarettes in a large sample of long-term users’.
Published in the Journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research, the study was an online survey with questions specifically concentrating on understanding the current dependence on e-cigarettes. A total of 3500 ex-smokers that use electronic cigarettes completed the Penn State Cigarette Dependence Index and the Penn State E Cigarette Dependence Index.
They found that e-liquid containing higher amounts of nicotine as well as the use of second-generation electronic cigarettes predicted dependency. People who used e-cigs for longer also appeared to be more addicted. “However, people with all the characteristics of a more dependant e-cig user still had a lower e-cig dependence score than their cigarette dependence score’, Professor Foulds said. ‘We think this is because they’re getting less nicotine from the e-cigs than they were getting from cigarette’s’.
Professor Foulds continued, ‘’this is a new class of products. It has the potential to do good and help a lot of people quit. We don’t have long-term health data of e-cig use yet, but any common sense analysis says that e-cigs are much less toxic, and our paper shows that they appear to be much less addictive, as well.
The findings have implications for developing e-cigs for smoking cessation purposes, though they are generally seen as an alternative to tobacco. Some people though do use them as a stepping-stone to quitting nicotine all together.
