Millions of people will make at least one resolution for 2015, but not many of us will actually keep them. We take a look at some of the most common New Year’s resolutions, and how you can achieve them.
It’s a sad fact that most people give up on their New Year’s resolutions in the last week of January. With a few simple tricks, though, the most popular New Year’s resolutions can be accomplished.
This is one of the most popular resolutions, and after the over-indulgence of the festive period it’s not hard to see why. It’s also a hard one to achieve and people often feel they are letting themselves down.
The problem with it is that it’s a very vague resolution – how much weight do you actually want to lose? Would you be happy if you lost 1lb by December, or 20lb by August?
A better resolution is to say how much weight you want to lose, by when, and how you’re going to do it. You can them make up a weight loss plan and stick to it.
Do More Exercise
It’s January the 3rd, and you’re standing in the middle of a packed gym, frozen in fear. February the 15th, and you’ve got your trainers on for a run but it’s cold outside so you shuffle indoors. Sound familiar?
Wanting to do more exercise and get fit is one of the most common resolutions every year, and it’s a very easy one to abandon.
The key to achieving this resolution is to pick an exercise that you will actually enjoy doing. There’s something out there for everyone – all you need to do is discover what you like.
Better yet, think about taking up an exercise with a friend of partner, so you can encourage each other to keep it up.
Learn Something New
The desire to try something different is always a good New Year’s Resolution. Problem is that if you’re starting from scratch you won’t immediately be a guru in your chosen field, and you’ll be tempted to compare yourself to others and down tools in frustration.
Perhaps the wooden bowl you carved after four weeks of classes looks more like a placemat, the fledgling French you tried out in Paris was met with blank stares, or you can’t knit anything other than a rectangle yet.
Don’t worry! Just relax and stick with this resolution, especially if you’re enjoying it. Learning a skill takes time and practise, and your efforts will pay off in the end.
Spend More Time With Friends And Family
Lots of us want to spend more time with friends and family but it can be hard to achieve this because of conflicting schedules and a lack of free time.
Social networks can also play havoc with this resolution, as we may feel like we’re staying in touch but really we’re not spending any quality time together. (In fact, getting away from social networks is another big New Year’s resolution, for this reason.)
To make this one work you should plan meetings with loved ones in advance. Pick a day of the month for lunch or the cinema with friends, take a regular nightclass together, or have a monthly Sunday lunch. Think about holidays that you would like to go to with your family, and get them booked up early in the year.
Whether you want to get your house into order, manage your time at work better, or save up for your summer holidays, getting organised is a very common New Year’s Resolution.
The best way to achieve this resolution is to make a proper plan up, with goals, so you can remind yourself why you’re doing it. Planning is also a good way to stay on top of things so you don’t lapse back into disorganisation and feel frustrated with yourself.
