Fun family days out this August
There’s only a few short weeks until the summer holidays slip away from us and young students around the country pick up their books and get back to their studies.
Make the most of what’s left with our pick of three special family days out this August – there’s sure to be something on our list to entertain even the pickiest grandchild!
Bekonscot Model Village & Railway, Buckinghamshire
See the world in miniature at Bekonscot Model Village and Railway. This popular attraction in Buckinghamshire is the first and oldest model village in the world – it opened in 1929 and in the more than 85 years since has offered adults and children alike a snapshot of 1930s England. Set across 1.5 acres of gardens, the model buildings are lots of fun for the young – and the young at heart.
Ready to go? Bekonscot Model Village & Railway is open daily from 10am – 5:30pm. Ticket prices are £9.80 for an adult; £7.50 concession; £5.80 for a child; a family pass is £19. Find more information and directions from the website.
Beamish Museum, County Durham
The historic Beamish Living Museum between Newcastle and Durham is like literally stepping back in time – the expansive grounds beautifully capture what life in urban and rural North East England was like in the early 20th century; visitors can take a tram, visit an old mine or wander through a Victorian town – it’s a great way to teach your grandchildren about history and a wonderful experience for parents and grandparents too.
Ready to go? Beamish Museum is open daily from 10am – 5pm. Ticket prices are £18.50 for an adult, £13.50 concession, £10.50 for a child and free for children under five. Find more information and directions from the website.
Warner Bros Studio Tour, London
Harry Potter fans of all ages will love the studio tour, filled with costumes, props, sets and plenty of secrets about how the films were made. Even if you’re not keen on the films, the studio tour is worth a visit – seeing the incredible artistry and painstaking attention to detail that went into making the films offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at what it’s really like to make a Hollywood movie. And with fun extras like the original Hogwarts Express steam engine train and the chance to sample butterbeer, this will be a day out you won’t soon forget – though it’s expensive, for a special occasion it’s worth every penny.
Ready to go? Book online for an allocated slot and allow at least three hours for the self-guided tour. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are £33 for adults £25 for children and £101 for a family ticket. Find more information and directions from the website.
