Whether you’re looking to hone your technique, better understand how to use colour, or study a specific medium like acrylic or watercolour, here’s our pick of some of the best free painting tutorials you can find online.

Will Kemp Art School

From the Will Kemp Art School website you can find a selection of excellent tutorials to help you improve your skills with acrylic painting. From their YouTube channel you can also find a series of tutorials in still life for beginners.

Painting With Jane

The website Painting With Jane is another excellent resource where you can find a range of instructive videos you can paint along with. She uploads a new tutorial every week, so it’s a great way to pick up with a new hobby.

Daria Callie


The painter Daria Callie has a brilliant YouTube page filled with interesting tutorials and videos to help you master the techniques of oil painting. From blending to colour mixing, you can find lots of useful videos to help you along.

The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross

The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross was an extremely popular television series in the 60s and 70s in the United States – each week Bob Ross would teach you how to create a different landscape painting in just 30 minutes. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, his videos have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. They’re available on Netflix and on YouTube to watch for free.

Watercolour Misfit

If you’re interested in getting started with watercolours, the YouTube channel Watercolour Misfit is a great place to start. From basic tutorials for complete beginners to more advanced techniques, this is a great place to go to learn more about the art of working with watercolours.

Having been an artist for most of my life I would recommend watercolours as a most relaxing hobby, if you are determined then trust me you can do it. Just don't try to be too clever to start with, learn to do a sky and then perhaps some trees and it will start to happen.

Hi I am in between moving house so have not been able to go to my art class and I really miss going for the company as well . I am having a go at watercolours so I am going to give the tutorial a go . It is so relaxing .
