Now’s the time to get buying or ordering your spring-flowering bulbs to be planted over the next month or so.
Some of the nicest bulbs to choose are dwarf bulbs, which will bring small, dainty flowers to your garden in the spring – especially useful if your garden is exposed and plants prone to getting battered down by winds.
Look out for Anemone blanda ‘White Splendour’, with its white flowers and green-yellow centre, and Chionodoxa siehei, with its crowded heads of large, violet-blue flowers, each with a big bright white eye.
Fritillaria michailovskyi has striking flowers that are yellow towards the tips and purple towards the base, with up to seven flowers per stem, and while the plant is only short, 15cm (6in) it makes quite an impact. Finally, Iris ‘Katharine Hodgkin’ has exquisitely patterned flowers that are pale blue with yellow and dark blue markings.
Plan next year’s harvest
Look forward to some delicious soft fruits next summer by getting your plans in place now. You can order cold stored strawberry runners for delivery in winter and continue planting new strawberry beds. It is also the time to cut back old canes of blackberries and hybrid berries after fruiting and tie in the new canes. You can also prune blackcurrants.
