Time to get busy in the garden

This is when it starts to get busy in the garden – you’ll want to be preparing your seed beds, sowing seed, getting winter shrubs cut back and generally tidying up around the garden.

Here are five jobs to be getting on with..

 Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes

 Protect new spring shoots from slugs

 Plant summer-flowering bulbs

 Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials

 Top dress containers with fresh compost

Get sowing

Now’s the time to start sowing seeds to ensure you get a fabulous summer display. Get set for plenty of colour in your garden by sowing hardy annuals such as pot marigolds and Californian poppies in pots to modules – if the weather is mild in your area you can choose to sow directly outside. If you want a natural look with drifts of colour, mark out irregular shaped seedbeds and then broadcast sow your seed within them. For scent and colour, sow sweet peas outside this month, while summer bedding plants can be sown under glass or in a heated propagator.
