From what to do with the leftover water from a boiled egg to a smart way to revive old crisps, these clever tips to cut kitchen waste will help you stretch every penny further and do your bit for the environment, too.
Grow your own spring onions
Next time you cook with spring onion, instead of throwing away the trimmed ends, take a white end and place it in a small tumbler glass filled with water. Leave on the windowsill so it has access to sunlight; the onion will continue to grow and can be trimmed down each time you want to use it.
Boil eggs, then water plants
Next time you boil an egg for breakfast or lunch, don’t pour the water from the saucepan away. Instead, let it cool, then use it to water your plants. The water will be rich in vitamins and nutrients absorbed from the egg shells.
Turn eggshells into dog food
Keep your egg shells after cooking to be used as a calcium-rich supplement for your pet! Dry eggshells in the oven at 120 degrees for roughly 30 minutes. Place into a pestle and mortar (or use a resealable sandwich bag then crush with a rolling pin) until ground into a fine powder. Sprinkle or incorporate a spoonful into your dog’s food to help them get a more balanced diet.
Add crunch back to stale crisps
If you have a packet of crisps that’s been left open and gone sadly stale, you don’t need to throw them away. Instead, spread onto a plate and put in the microwave for 10 seconds.
Make ice lollies from flat soft drinks
If your favourite fizzy juice has gone flat, try pouring it into an ice lolly tray and freezing – it makes a delicious summer treat.
Remove dents in carpet with ice cubes
A couple of ice cubes can help restore your carpet’s surface if you’ve moved a piece of furniture and it’s left a dent behind. Place an ice cube (or several, depending on the size of the groove). When the ice cubes melt, they will encourage the carpet fibres to expand. To return to an upright position, hoover over the spot until the carpet looks good as new.
