Clever uses for mismatched socks

Don’t throw lone socks away when you can’t find their match – there are other brilliant ways you can put them to good use around your household you might never have thought of. 

Here are a few of our favourite clever uses for socks.

Make a heat pad

Help ease the pain of a sore neck or back with a simple heating pad that you can make in minutes with things you already have around the house. Fill a sock with dry rice and tie securely by knotting or with an elastic band. Put in the microwave for thirty seconds (or longer if you desire) and then apply to sore areas for some heat relief.

Create a makeshift draught excluder

Around this time of year the wind and cold weather can make draughts a problem. You can make a quick, inexpensive and temporary draught excluder using socks. Stuff a pair with other mismatched socks to create a padded tube, or better yet, fill it with rice!

Computer wrist guards

If you find browsing the computer or typing at your desk for long periods of time causes discomfort, you can support your wrists easily by rolling up and using as a padded armrest.

Dusting and cleaning

A good pair of cotton socks can start a new life as a wash or dust cloth, and are particularly useful if you wear them as a glove!

Paint the handrail

If your handrails need a fresh coat of paint this simple trick can make the job all the easier. Get a rubber glove to protect your hand, then wear a sock like a mitt. Dip the sock in paint and then get to work – you can quickly and easily cover each rail by closing your hand around it and working from top to bottom.

Make a dog toy

You can make a simple and fun dog toy for your furry friend by stuffing a tennis ball into a sock and then knotting shut. It’s easy to throw and fun to catch.
