Clever uses for vegetable oil

A little bit of vegetable oil can go a long way – and it’s useful for so much more than frying.

Here’s some of our favourite clever uses for vegetable oil you’ll wish you knew sooner.

Remove paint from hands

Instead of scrubbing paint from your hands, try rubbing some vegetable oil into any areas where you have paint on your fingers. Let it absorb for a few minutes then wash the paint away – it should peel off easily.

Keep lids from getting stuck

A jar of honey or golden syrup can be surprisingly hard to open again when a lid has been firmly screwed on. Rubbing a small amount of vegetable oil around the rim will prevent the lid from being glued shut.

Line your measuring cups

Similarly, if you need to measure out ingredients like honey or jelly into a measuring cup, lightly lining it with a small amount of vegetable oil first will help the ingredients slide right out.

Polish stainless steel

You can use a drop of vegetable oil and a cloth to buff out smudges and fingerprints from stainless steel.

Soften your heels

Forget expensive lotion – massage vegetable oil into your heels in the evening and pop on a pair of socks.

Season cutting boards

Rubbing oil into your cutting boards and wooden utensils like spoons will help protect them and restore them to their former glory.

Clean your car’s exterior

Whether removing dirt and grime from the hubcaps or wiping away insects from a windscreen, using a few drops of vegetable oil into a cloth can work wonders and help create a barrier that prevents build up from happening again.
