Simple packing tips and tricks

Whether you’re going on a long weekend away or planning a large round-the-world holiday, for most travellers, packing can be something of a logistical nightmare.

From staying organised and having home comforts to hand to fitting things into small airline-friendly bags, here’s our pick of the best simple packing tips and tricks.

  • Avoid stains by turning lightly coloured clothing and dark wash denim inside out when you’re packing everything into a smaller case. For shoes, wrap them in a plastic bag, or better yet, take a hotel shower cap to cover the base and prevent any dirt transfer.
  • Rolling your clothing means it can be packed more efficiently and also helps prevent your clothing from creasing. Vacuum packs also work well and can really help you maximise space – particularly if you’re flying with only a carry-on.
  • Packing cubes are excellent for longer holidays where you’ll be packing much more with you and need to stay organised. You can divide your clothing so everything is easily accessible, and when you’re unpacked, the cubes can also double as a makeshift laundry bin.
  • Keep clothing smelling fresh in your suitcase by adding one or two dryer sheets or fabric conditioner sheets to your luggage. This is especially useful if you’re travelling on a long haul flight where your baggage will be stored in the hold for long periods of time.
  • Make the most of your hand luggage and pack this smartly. Carry medicines and valuables with you, as well as a few items of clothing. Consider what you’d need to get through a couple of days if your luggage was lost – that way you’ll never be caught short.
  • Tag your luggage with something easily identifiable so you can find it easily on the train platform or luggage carousel. Something brightly coloured like a piece of ribbon tied to the handle should do the trick.
  • Use sandwich bags to organise smaller items like wires and cables, small toiletries, jewellery and so on. It means you’ll always know where everything is and can access it easily.
  • Take solid shampoo and conditioner with you instead of liquid versions to minimise the number of liquids you take with you. Lush makes wonderful shampoo and conditioner bars that lather just like a bar of soap and can save precious space in your toiletries bag.
  • Choose multifunctional items where possible, particularly if you’ll be in several climates. Choose clothing that can be dressed up or dressed down, or if you’re staying somewhere for a long time, pieces that are easy to wash and dry.
  • Remember home essentials can help you feel more comfortable in new surroundings. If you like a particular kind of tea or are often cold, packing a few tea bags and an empty water bottle can significantly increase your comfort when you’re away. Think about what’s essential to your daily routine and whether there is any way you can replicate that away from home. If you struggle to relax, for example, a small lavender scented candle, some pillow spray or bath oil may be well-worth the luggage space.
  • Choose lightweight luggage instead of old, heavy suitcases. Luggage isn’t as expensive as it once was; it’s possible to get plastic luggage that’s incredibly light and also has the benefit of four wheels. Stores like Debenhams and Primark are both known for their affordable suitcase offerings.
