5 Things to look out for in your home care package (and what to avoid)

In the world of boiler, heating and home care, not all plans are built equally.

Often the cheapest come with pitfalls that don’t cover you as much as you thought they would. Here we look at some of those pitfalls that you should look out for and weigh-up when making that all important decision to protect your home year-round and keep it running smoothly.

1. Is your older boiler and model covered?

With age, just like humans, comes the inevitable that we, and boilers, are more likely to break down due to wear and tear. As a result, did you know your boiler might not be automatically covered by your provider? Additionally some models aren’t covered as it can be harder to find spare parts or incur higher costs. Make sure you check all ages of boilers are covered and there isn’t an additional charge of increase on your premium. At Hometree all boilers of all ages are covered as standard. Find out more

2. Watch out for caps on claims and high call out charges

Some plans are cheap for a reason – they don’t fully protect you. If the cost of repair exceeds a certain amount you may be asked to pay the difference. This can come as a nasty surprise if you’ve thought that your plan had you fully covered in all circumstances. Ensure you have a plan with unlimited claims so you’re fully protected. Hometree’s core plans each have unlimited claims and no caps on repairs. Find out more

3. Is your plan “emergency only”?

Plans can come in the form of “emergency only” coverage. This means that only absolute emergency repairs are complete. As an example, if you have an upstairs and downstairs toilet, one of which has an issue, your emergency plan won’t repair your broken toilets since your other one is still functioning. It won’t be classified as an emergency. Very frustrating. None of Hometree’s plans are ‘emergency-only’. They repair everything as agreed in your maintenance plan. Find out more

4. Are they there when you really need them?

When it finally comes to making a claim, especially when you really need someone, how the company responds is critical. Do they have someone you can just talk to any time of the day or night? Are you kept on hold for ages trying to speak to someone? Again this is when frustration builds and can make an already stressful issue worse. Hometree have 24/7 helplines with 90% of calls answered in less than 20 seconds. Find out more

5. Price hikes after your first year

Many plans will lure you in with a discounted price in the first year. Then will immediately increase it by 20% or more, and then a little bit more each year hoping you won’t notice, effectively punishing your for your loyalty. Hometree are fully transparent with their price changes. In most cases only raising by the cost of inflation. Find out more
