Clever home cleaning tricks to make the annual spring clean a breeze

Cleaning – it’s a chore that never seems to be finished.

Knowing a few clever tricks can help make the process quicker and easier, leaving you with a tidier home and more time to enjoy it.

Here’s a few of our favourite clever home cleaning tricks. Have you tried any before

Try dryer sheets

Dryer sheets can help tackle everything from buffing spots off mirrors to cleaning baseboards. Check out our list of 10 clever tricks dryer sheets can accomplish

Microwave your sponge clean

Sponges do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to cleaning your home, and can end up picking up a lot of bacteria along the way. Help keep them clean and remove bacteria by sticking a damp sponge in the microwave for 30 seconds or giving it a run through the dishwasher. Yes, really!

Brighten whites with baking soda

Baking soda is a brilliant and cheap solution to help brighten up your laundry. Add a cup of baking soda to your washing and watch your whites come out brighter than ever.

Polish stainless steel with olive oil

Stainless steel appliances like kitchen extractor fans and refrigerators can give your home a modern feel, but can also be impossible to keep clean from fingerprints and the like. A small amount of rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth can remove streaks and greasy fingerprint marks. You can also help prevent them with olive oil – once a month rub a small amount of olive oil into your stainless steel appliances to help soften scratches and repel future marks. Buff away the excess to restore it to a showroom shine.

Clean cloudy glasses with vinegar

Vinegar is a brilliant and cheap solution for a whole range of household cleaning challenges. For cloudy glasses, rub vinegar into the affected area with paper towel to restore them to their former glory. For more tips on how to use vinegar around the home, check out our top 10 list.

Use bread to pick up glass

If you break glass, instead of trying to pick up the tiny shards with your fingers, try this instead. Press a piece of soft bread over the area – it will grab the tiny fragments in an instant and save you from getting them stuck on the bottom of your feet.

Clean chopping boards with salt and lemon

Instead of using chemical cleaners on your wooden chopping boards, try this easy trick instead. Sprinkle kosher salt over the surface of the chopping board. Slice a lemon in half and use the lemon to scrub the salt into the board. Wipe clean and you’re done. Want to know what else lemon can do? We’ve got a list for that, too!
