New Tax Disc Rules
Are you aware of the new tax disc rules? From 1st October 2014 you will no longer get a paper tax disc to display in your car.
The paper tax disc is being scrapped after 93 years although tax will still need to be paid, and it will no longer be transferred when buying a second-hand vehicle.
You will still need to get vehicle tax and you will still receive a reminder from the DVLA to tell you when your tax disc is due for renewal.
The DVLA holds a digital record of taxed and untaxed vehicles which means that it is no longer required for you to display it in your car as proof that you have paid your tax.
Buying a vehicle
From 1st October 2014 if you buy a new vehicle the tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to purchase a new vehicle tax before you can drive your new car.
Among the more welcome changes is the ability to pay via direct debit instead of the annual or six-month options currently available.
But drivers selecting monthly payments will pay 5 per cent extra each year on top of the average annual cost of tax and the millions of people who pay with a credit card will be hit with a £2.50 surcharge.
Selling a vehicle:
People selling their car are expected to tell the DVLA straight away of the change of ownership or face fines of up to £1,000. When you are selling a vehicle and you have notified the DVLA then you will get an automatic refund for any months that are still left on your vehicle tax.
