A Solution to Loneliness with Man’s Best Friend

Print Friendly

The national leading pet sitting company Barking Mad have joined the anti-loneliness campaign by working to match older people with a furry pal on a temporary dog holiday.

The topic has received huge media attention including a recent BBC1 documentary ‘The Age of Loneliness’ yet this year many older people will have no one to speak to from one day to the next.

The dog sitting company has the answer for many, as it operates across the country matching dog loving ‘hosts’ to dogs whilst their owners are away.

Barking Mad host Sheila explains how it has changed her life as she finds her home life routine very lonely sometimes.

Barking Mad’s founder and managing director Lee Dancy said,

“One million older people in the UK go for a month without speaking to anyone which breaks our hearts. We are delighted to help active older people make a new friend which also keeps them busy. Our hosts love a doting companion who never says a word and is always pleased to see them. What better way to see the long dark winter days than with a furry friend to talk to?”

Proven Health Benefits of Canine Company:

The physical health benefits of having a dog are well established. There is an enormous feeling of companionship and well-being having a dog to share your day with and dog walking is the perfect way to establish a routine that has perhaps slipped when it is easier to stay inside. There are millions of dog lovers across Britain who always have their best friend by their side encouraging them to get out and about whatever the weather. Dog walkers talk to other dog walkers as they have a common interest and an excuse to hold a conversation that otherwise might never happen.

How it works:

Becoming a ‘host’ by looking after somebody else’s dog whilst their owners are away is all set-up and organised by your local Barking Mad branch who take this often informal arrangement and make it fully safe, insured and easy to take part in without costing a penny. As a dog holiday host you provide a loving home environment where your visitor relaxes and feels at home. Regular exercise and companionship is your part of the deal and the cost, administration and transport is dealt with by your local representative. There is no need to worry about paperwork or dealing with the customer yourself as that is all taken care of. As the dog host, all you need to do is meet with your Barking Mad dog holiday agent and you agree together the type of dogs you like and when you are available to look after them. I can understand how you feel Major red about losing your dog to old age, sometimes it is knowing when their time comes and letting them go with dignity.
I have a 15 year old Norfolk Terrier, I have had him since he was 8 weeks old. He is on tablets for his heart (he has had a heart murmur all his life) He costs me £36 a month to keep him alive but worth every penny. He still has quality of life, loves his walks and gobbles his food down. He is a grumpy old so and so but he is loved to bits, but like his sister before him, when the time is right he will go on his spiritual journey, I will let him go with great sadness and love. PS, he is the oldest of four dogs that I have.
