Brush up your language skills in 2019
Learning a new language can be a very rewarding experience and it’s a great challenge to take on in 2019.
Whether you’re hoping to be able to communicate with a new friend or family member, you’re planning a trip to a new country or you’ve simply always had a hankering to be fluent in a second language, there’s nothing like the thrill of learning a new tongue.
We know it can be tricky to get the amount of help and motivation you need however, especially if there aren’t any local classes in your area, so we’ve put together a list of our favourite online resources to help you along the way.
This simple, award-winning and informative site is an excellent place to learn another language. With content for your mobile phone or tablet as well as your desktop computer, it’s a really flexible way to learn and offers an excellent selection of languages to choose from.
What’s more, because it boasts a worldwide community of over 50 million users, you’ll have the chance to practise your new language skills on native speakers – without ever having to leave the comfort of your own home.
The BBC also offers some great resources for anyone wanting to learn a new language, with 40 to choose from. You can follow a course, have a go at phrases and brush up on your vocabulary, absolutely free.
There are also plenty of videos, audio clips and tests to keep you entertained as you learn. The site even offers some online video dramas for beginners, perfect for snagging your interest as you begin your foray into a new language.
This site has an interesting way of encouraging you to pick up new words and phrases – it has a flashcard-based system that helps make the learning process easier. Making use of lots of memory tricks, Memrise is also available as an app for your phone.
One of the nice things about this tool is the way that it makes learning fun. You’re awarded points as you learn and have the opportunity to pit yourself against other members of the site.
Learn a new language while also benefiting the web community as a whole, with the help of Duolingo. This interesting tool allows users to start learning while also translating sites on the web, thanks to its interactive series of learning programmes and lessons.
It also checks your progress as you work your way forward and actually learns which areas you tend to have trouble with, tailoring advice for you based on that. It also offers the chance to race the clock, earn points and has lots of fun, bite sized lessons to enjoy.
What language have you always wanted to learn?
