On Reflection

This is a personal reflection, written by Marie Hindmarsh, about her passion for poetry …

On Reflection

Some people say of my poems, that I have been given a gift.
Well I’m not really sure if this is true but writing sure gives me a lift.
I try to make them amusing to put a smile on the readers face.
Sometimes I wonder if I’ve reached my goal or shall I give up the race

I write about things that have happened to me over my many years.
Some inspired from happy memories, some written after shedding tears.
Now I’m growing older I see the funny side of life.
Also how my careless words can get me into strife

I write about aging gracefully or how the body aches.
I often write with tongue in cheek and how “them’s just the breaks”
I can always look and laugh at myself, infrequently do I feel blue
I have always loved doing handcrafts so, invariably find something to do.

I sew knit and crochet, many baby things abound,
these I keep for future great grandkids, for when I’m no longer around.
They are not exactly heirlooms, but just things to remember me by.
As every stitch was worked with love in many an evening gone by

I lost my best friend in twenty ten Peter was the love of my life.
We had forty five years together since the day he made me his wife.
I often write him poems when anniversaries are drawing near
some folk would say that’s morbid yet I often feel him here.

I write him special poems to leave for him where he lays
it helps me when I think of him in many many ways.
I do not make them public they were purely written for him,
so the chances of anyone reading them, I would say are very slim.

But my other poems I put out there I like to think they make you smile,
as you sit with a cuppa in your hand when you have a little while

I'm a 74 years young. I was born in Chelmsford Essex where my mother was evacuated to during the war. But I grew up in West Ham London so its fair to say I'm a Cockney and proud of it. My husband suggested that we should relocate to New Zealand which I was very reluctant to do but I'm now so pleased we did in 1973, I just love this country. I live in Auckland city which is surrounded by beautiful beaches. I have a daughter Beverley and two sons Paul & Robert.. Between them they have given me eight grandchildren between 6 years to 28 years old. I also have a great granddaughter whom I adore. I lost my husband and best friend Peter in 2010 so now live alone. I have always enjoyed hand crafts and recently with a friend started a group called Knocker Knitter NZ. We knit them for women who unfortunately have had to have a mastectomy. These are an alternative to the prosthetic ones. We have been in the news paper and from that now have a large group of ladies knitting them for us to supply to the breast clinics around the country We have also encouraged people in other parts of NZ to start their own group. Its overwhelming that since we started in February the response has been fantastic. I wrote my first poem 20 years ago then didn't write any others till I started again about 3 years ago. I really enjoy writing poems about my life over the years which I'm pleased to say many people enjoy As long as they do I will carry on writing them when I'm not knitting?
