Under Foreign Skies

With Poppy Day and Remembrance fast approaching, Michael Whitehead as shared this poignant poem with us.  He wrote it a couple of years ago, mainly to highlight that not all war time casualties suffer physical injuries,as an ex soldier himself, he knows …

Under Foreign Skies

I’m Crying
But no one sees the tears.
I’m crying
But no one hears the sobs

I’m pleading for a friendly ear
But no one hears my whispered scream.
I’m drowning amongst my dearest friends
Who cannot see my panic.

I’m scared,
I see no bright future.
I’m crying
But I don’t know why.

Futility underscores all my thoughts
And rivulets of frustration
Flow unabashed across my dust stained face.
I’m crying
My sobbing breaks the quiet of the desert night .

And yet I know
With the pearlescent light of dawn
Again will I don the cloak of command
And order my brave sons of Albion forward
To face I know not what.

I’m crying but no one sees the tears
For God’s sake,
I’m only twenty one.
A lieutenant.
And this was Helmand
