Should Page 3 in The Sun end now?

After ensuring that most of the national and international press, including its own sister paper The Times, were sufficiently convinced of Page 3’s demise on Monday, it appears today that this was just a ruse, and the topless models seem to have been reinstated.

The campaign group ‘No More Page 3’, which began in 2012 and attracted 217,000 signatures to a petition calling for a ban, acknowledged that “the fight might be back on”.

Over the past three days, there have been no topless models on Page 3, fuelling speculation the feature was on its way out.

Topless models were first introduced by the Sun in 1970, less than a year after Rupert Murdoch bought the title.

In recent years, the paper has faced growing criticism from campaigners who said the feature was out of date in the modern world.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said editors were free to publish “what they like”.

But Page Three was not “in keeping with the way in which women both want to be and should be represented”, he added on LBC radio.
