You had to be born in the 50s if you remember …

 playing outside, coal fires and the big freeze

For those of us born in the 1950s, we entered the world in a post-war decade that saw Britain slowly emerge from hard times and rationing, while still enjoying the sense of community and camaraderie made so strong during the war.

By the 1960s, things were really looking up and we grew up in an age of massive social, economic and cultural change. You could say we were born in black and white but grew up in glorious colour!

Read on for more rose-tinted memories of years long passed but not forgotten.

Some of us had our first bath in a big tin in front of a coal fire.

BATH

Home deliveries came by bike and we all knew each other very well. In fact, your mum would know you’d got up to mischief before you did.

We played for hours in streets and in fields. No one knew where we were, or what we were up to… as long as were home in time for tea.

Saturday meant one thing… going to the pictures to see the likes of Flash Gordon.

One particular event stopped us all in our tracks. Can you remember where you were?

NIXON

But wasn’t it a great time to be young and free? Radio, records and reel to reel…

While our music took America by storm, American programmes took us into the age of colour.

Suddenly everyone had a car and minis hurtled down brand new motorways to the far reaches of the country…

MINI

Gone was the mangle. Homes got gadgets – washing machines, fridges, even freezers.

KITCHEN

We even had novelty lamps. Useless but a nice change from paraffin.
