Route 66, the Mother Road, is an iconic 2,448 journey through eight states and three time zones linking Chicago, Illinois and Santa Monica, California.

US 66 served as a primary route for those who migrated west, especially during the 1930s and the road supported the economies of the communities through which it passed. The arrival of interstate
highways threatened to obliterate the road and those communities, but the legend of Route 66 lives on. Much of the original road can be re-traced today so travellers can follow in the tyre tracks of those who
made the route famous.
The legend surrounding Route 66 was burnished by writers like Jack Kerouac and John Steinbeck and the fascination with the history of the road fascinates millions around the world. In the last few years Billy Connolly and the Hairy Bikers have brought Route 66 TV series to British viewers and generated fresh interest in the journey.

Beginning on the corner of Jackson and Michigan Boulevards in the heart of downtown Chicago, route highlights come thick and fast; the Cozy Dog drive-in at Springfield, Illinois, the Martin Luther King Memorial Bridge linking Illinois and Missouri and the magnificent Gateway Arch in St Louis. The rolling hills of the Ozark Mountains and the rich croplands of the Midwest give way to the red rocks of the dry and dusty southwest. You can detour to the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas before hitting California and the run to the Pacific Ocean.
