Should shops continue to take cash?Cash is very important for those who find budgeting hard. Debt barely existed in lower income households in the past, when people were paid in cash. Housekeeping money was set aside then what you had left was in your pocket. The only payday loan available was a "sub" from your employer!!ViewDate:

Do you agree with adding calorie counts to menus?I don't think this would achieve the desired behaviour change. If you need to select a lower calorie meal you should equip yourself with enough knowledge to do this - or simply ask for advice. A meal out should be a joy!!ViewDate:

Does the phasing out of wet wood and coal affect how you heat your home?I have 2 woodburners and no central heating in my home. For the last 2 years I mainly use kiln dried logs supplied locally BUT I also buy a few loads from a local tree surgeon which is a useful by-product for him and I "season" them in my shed. There is another local log supplier that has his own woodland which he manages sustainably and I hope he is permitted to continue this practice and survives financially.ViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsThis is an issue in Cornwall as the Council seek to close or pass on the costs of upkeep of facilities to willing partners My suggestion is that there are Council Tax discounts for businesses that open their toilets for public use. There could be official notices replacing the usual "customer use only" ones. I am confident that the increased footfall would offset increased cleaning & consumables costs. In many European countries cafes etc have a duty to make their facility available to the public.ViewDate:

Should over 70s be banned from voting on the country's future?Unfortunately this demonstrates a lack of respect for the wisdom of elders! People who have lived through recent history have a deeper understanding of why we are where we are & a more realistic view of potential consequences including the "unforseen" I believe younger voters are often unduly influenced by teachers with strong views, often left wing, which they articulate well. It is also a good thing that communications from political parties are under scrutiny. In the recent past this has been close to "grooming" I have to admit I haven't looked into this but: Do Scotland actually meet the criteria to be an EU member if they became a standalone country?ViewDate:

Would you feel comfortable going cashless?I am old fashioned. I like cash and people like being paid in cash - I always offer. I feel concern for those unable to budget effectively without having their weekly allowance visible to them. However bad you were at "sums" you know when you've only got a couple of quid left in your pocket!ViewDate:

Wildlife of the PantanalI spent 3 months in the Pantanal in 2018, working as a volunteer in an eco-lodge and on a farm (fazenda). It is a fabulous place to visit for bird & wildlife spotting, I have over 900 photos & I will be returning in 2020!ViewDate:

New to the forumHi Catlady Try volunteering it's cheap & rewarding. I just spent 16 fabulous weeks working in Brazil in a tourist lodge & on a farm. It was great fun and met loads of interesting people. I paid for flight & transfers & got free board & lodging (not 5*) The web is great for finding placements start with "Charity Job" which has actual jobs and volunteer requirements. I used Volunteer Latin America which has a small joining fee also look at Workaway and Working on Organic Farms (WOOF) both of which are worldwide. Put your big girl pants on & go for it! Would you find it easy to reduce your consumption of meat?I find these studies ridiculous. There are significant environments in the world where grazing is the only viable farming option. Taking cattle out of some ecosystems could have disastrous consequences which could not easily be reversed. If the concerns are deforestation & chemicals on what basis do they conclude that this will improve with increased arable farming? Our ancestors were hunter gatherers and meat was essential in winter months we need to continue to live in tune with nature. Yes I am a farmers daughter all farmers are environmentalists it is part of the job. I have just retuned from the pantanal wetlands of brazil where I worked on a cattle ranch. The system is extensive protecting the wonderful ecosystem & they eat beef 2/3 meals per day. They are certainly not wealthy it is subsistence farming and part of the local culture. The cowboys were my age & had the physique of men half their age so the diet has not caused them harm either. JudyViewDate:
