My Mother's WillYou can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family. They seem to be very selfish and me, me, me types. Ask them what their favourite charity is and donate what you intend giving them to the charity. Your mum obviously chose the correct thing to do................... considering the circumstances !!ViewDate:

Do you think we need tougher lockdown restrictions? There will always be 'IDIOTS' who don't adhere to whatever rules are laid down. Rules are made because selfish people don't do as they are asked. The restrictions should be enforced much more firmly, and if the 'IDIOTS' still break them hit them hard with huge fines or put them where they can't cause any harm...... PRISON !! They really do make me angry. Grrrrrr !! Bring back the birch,,,, Bring back the stocks.... He says...... With tongue in cheek. But then again !!!!ViewDate:

Will you be joining in the Clap for Heroes on Thursday? The weekly clapping was a gesture of our thanks to the NHS and all other essential workers for all their hard work. I think the point was made and judging by the responses from those workers it was very much appreciated. It just will not be the same second time around, and, if they don't know by now, those essential workers know that the majority of people 100% appreciate what they do. Once society eventually gets to grip with COV19 then will be the time for everyone to put pressure on the Government to give those who need it a decent salary ( especially the nurses & doctors on the front line, in COV19 wards ). Personally I think they need a medal too. Last time our street had loads of 'clappers'. I was informed that this time only one person clapped.ViewDate:

Capital PunishmentAnd then there are the killers of Lee Rigby !!! We know 100% who did that, yet they are still alive and in prison costing the tax payer almost three quarters of million pounds per year. Many more similar cases like these, and it really does make my blood boil that 'maybe' at some time in the future these evil, evil people may be released on to our streets again. I'd better just stop there. Otherwise......... !!!!ViewDate:

Are you a big tea drinker?I like lots of different types of tea, with Oolong and Spicy being very tasty. But..... the first cup of English Breakfast is heavenly. Up at 6.30 ish, back to bed for an hour's reading with my cuppa and a couple of biscuits. The first sip - or gulp - makes me feel good to be alive. I'm almost at the stage where I just live for 6.30 every morning, after that it's downhill all the way. (JOKING of course).ViewDate:

Wet WeekendOxford had a really good season last time until losing a couple of quality players, and then they faded a bit. The Shrews will probably finish mid table again unless things change for the better. We seem to boss the 1st half - home or away - and then run out of steam. Miss going to the games though, and I do think the fans make a big difference for the home team. I missed my cricket as much as the football this year, although I was lucky enough to watch some of the local games involving Shrewsbury's teams. It's going to be a long Winter methinks !!!!ViewDate:

Wet WeekendI'm a Mighty Shrew Len. This is my 70th year going to watch them (or as the case may be at the moment, NOT going to watch them). I'm about 300 mtrs from the River Severn, so lots of nice riverside walks around here.ViewDate:

Wet WeekendI agree Len. I like to go out for a walk too but not when it's absolutely chucking it down. I live quite close to a river and some nearby residents suffered horrendous damage during the last floods. Fortunately our block of flats is fairly safe from flooding, but having said that we all had to move our cars out of the underground parking area during the last floods. Is it really less than three weeks since I was sitting out in the sun chatting to neighbours !!! I love the British seasons but unfortunately as soon as Autumn arrives my poor old joints start to sing out with the inconvenience of arthritis. It looks like being a w/e of reading, listening to my local footy team on the radio, and tv sport for me, but hopefully the rain will ease so that I can get out for a wander and a bit of fresh air.ViewDate:

How we lived in the FiftiesI remember those days Len, just after WW2. Extremely hard times, but looking back 70 years or so, and although we were almost living in poverty, there were happy times too. As for going too the footie, supporters mixing (without any trouble) and supporting both teams !!!! Sorry Len, as far as I was concerned there was only one team I cheered for. My team. I wonder how today's kids would fare if they were all of a sudden transported back to the 1940's/50's ?? Maybe they would realize how lucky they are in today's day and age, despite Covid19 !! I certainly wouldn't swap my childhood/teenage years for the present.ViewDate:

Do you have confidence in the test, track and trace strategy?Nothing surprises me any more Lionel. Do the powers that be not realize that there are probably hundreds of thousands of ' asymptomatic 'people walking about, not knowing they are carrying it as they have no symptoms. Hence many of us older people who are not really vulnerable have probably had the virus and unaware of it. Just can't see it going away in a hurry !!!ViewDate:

Cycling on pavements and in parksAbsolutely dangerous letting them cycle on FOOT paths and RIVER paths. I walk quite a lot and the amount of times i have nearly been 'taken out' by these selfish individuals goes in to double figures. It's the local authorities who are at fault for allowing it. What makes my mind boggle is even where there are proper cycle lanes some cyclists still ride on the FOOT path so as to avoid traffic. Having said all that the majority are careful, but a GOOD LOUD bell should be mandatory.ViewDate:

Should the Proms be stripped of its favourite vocals?I too am extremely proud to be British ( Welsh, Irish & English stock). Also a Royalist and would dread the thought of a President Blair, Cameron or anyone else of that ilk. However........ I have always disagreed with "God Save the Queen" being the English National Anthem. The 'NATIONAL' anthem should reflect the country and not a person. GSTQ - in my humble opinion - should only be played when Her Majesty is present. There should have been a public survey for the English to choose their own National Anthem donkeys years ago. " I VOW TO THEE MY COUNTRY " maybe !!!!!ViewDate:

Women In MusicIf you want to see a 'performance' watch Jennifer Holliday singing "And I Am Telling You" on You Tube from the original stage version of Dream Girls. This mind-blowing version has to be one of the most iconic renditions of all time. In a word WOW !!!! At my first viewing I really thought she was going to have a heart attack. I've seen some exceptionally good singers doing very good versions of this song, but this is always the one I come back to listen to. She looks completely different now by the way.ViewDate:

Covid-19 testingIs there a specific reason why hospital car parks cannot be used for drive through testing ? It seems a lot of people are having an issue with getting to them, whereas having them on hospital parks - considering there is no visiting allowed they must be fairly empty - should enable essential workers and their families easier access !! Do you buy a daily newspaper?I stopped buying a paper about 15 years ago. When young I started off with the Mail or Express (1950's & 60's) but eventually - when they started to make up stories and ruin peoples lives as the Mirror & Sun are apt to do - I switched to the Telegraph (late 70's). I read this paper for years and then noted that they started to put in apologetic notes for printing mis-leading stories at least twice a week. I decided that if the Telegraph were printing 'lies' that was it for me with newspapers. I used to still buy the Observer or Times on a Sunday for the sport, but eventually stopped doing that too.ViewDate:

Should plant nurseries and growers be allowed to sell their plants?Pretty well agree with all you say Kes, but I would still let them do a email/telephone order and delivery service. That would only necessitate one vehicle being on the road to do deliver rather than hundreds collecting. We HAVE to save as many businesses as possible. In doing so the economy will recover so much more quickly when this dreadful thing ends. The awful truth is that whenever we get back to a form of normality people will think it's all over. Don't wish to scare but..... virus's don't disappear completely, they go into hibernation. (Quote from "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston. A very scary book written about 30 years ago. Another virus will come along one day so let's hope we - the Nation - will be better prepared for it. Lots of authors wrote books predicting something like this - or worse - and governments have not taken heed of what they said. Anyway I've gone off the track of garden centres so I will leave it there. Sorry for the rambling.ViewDate:

Should plant nurseries and growers be allowed to sell their plants?Click & collect !!! Sorry, NO WAY. That would mean if one garden centre has 80 orders in a day 80 more vehicles ' per day 'would be on the roads (560 per week) which is exactly what the police and government DON'T WANT. if anything much better to do order & deliver, whereby only the delivery vehicle is out on the road !!ViewDate:

Should plant nurseries and growers be allowed to sell their plants? As much as most would like to see garden centres open to public visiting it has to be a big NO, NO in the present situation. The whole idea of this partial lockdown to all but essential services is to keep as many cars off the roads as possible and much more importantly to STOP people congregating - I am sure we would all like to - and maybe inadvertently spreading this awful virus. I am really in favour though of the garden centres taking orders on-line or telephone and doing a delivery service. Some of them say they cannot do this...……. WHY ?? Lack of staff & vehicles is no excuse, there are lots of people who would be glad to help. It just needs government permission for them to operate like this. Quite a few shops and Supermarkets are still selling plants so where are they purchasing them from ? Why don't they phone around and offer 'deals' to the said establishments, at least they wouldn't lose out completely if they can come to some sort of arrangement !! It's a bit like some of the farmers saying that they will have to throw away 50% of their crops if they cannot get the pickers back from Eastern Europe. There are thousands of kids/young adults off school/University at present, and in my day it was they who were doing ';Summer' jobs on farms picking the crops. The answers are there, it's just having the tenacity, foresight and will power to carry them out. I just cannot see Government refusing to allow students to help the farmers. I ran my own business for almost 50 years, and we had some really difficult times, especially with bad weather, Stock Market collapses, recessions etc, but with a bit of British Bulldog spirit, agreement with my clients and with my staff we got through those times to become profitable again, without anyone losing employment. A cut in hrs, most definitely, but still a job to go to at the end of it...………...I've gone on too long...…… Sorry.ViewDate:

Daily diaries of those who are self-isolating due to CoronavirusThese " I'm alright Jack " people, who are blatantly not adhering to what the government request us to do, have got to be clamped down on by the Police. If it's too much for the Police to deal with I can see the Army being brought in. Being ex military that's fine by me. People have got to be made, if necessary, to stick to the governments/medical experts advice. Otherwise they endanger us all.ViewDate:

Should plant nurseries and growers be allowed to sell their plants?Having reflected on my previous post, I think a lot of you are correct so I have changed slightly to saying let them open for on-line and telephone orders only. As some of you say there will be too many people about at the garden centres if they are allowed to open as normal. But the wisest and safest way is for them to operate an on-line/telephone system whereby you pay for an order with a card and they then deliver.ViewDate:

Should the Government launch a food-rationing scheme? Is that question for me Viking ? Oh yes I can remember rationing 70 years ago. Being the eldest child I was always the one sent to the shops with the ration book I was always the one who went knocking on the doors of better off neighbours asking if they could 'lend' us a bowl of sugar, can you please let us have a jug of milk until tomorrow, can you let us have some lumps of coal to keep the fire going. I could go on but this would end up being a book. Oh yes, I was about 7/8 years of age and I certainly do remember rationing and many more hardships. Many of us had hard times in those days, so we are 'survivors'. I think most of our younger generation ( and yes, they do have fantastic opportunities in life today, but whether they choose to take them is another thing !) are really good kids at heart and when it comes to what is best for 'the nation' I am pretty sure that they would see sense and rise to the task. But as in my previous post, I don't think is wise to do it at this time.ViewDate:

Should plant nurseries and growers be allowed to sell their plants?ABSOLUTELY..... If Supermarkets can operate social distancing I am sure garden centres can do the same. One of the main things the government MUST DO is to not let businesses cease trading/go in to liquidation if at all possible. By doing this the economic recovery will be a lot shorter.ViewDate:

Should the Government launch a food-rationing scheme? Some producers are saying that 50% of crops will have to be thrown away if they can't get the 'pickers' in from Eastern Europe. WHY ?? When I was a youngster in the 50's students used to do a lot of the harvesting for farmers etc. Seeing that they will not be going back to school/university before this virus is well and truly done with, maybe they could find it in themselves to come to the fore again !!! It would be much appreciated by the rest of society I am sure. I know social distancing is in force but the fields and poly-tunnels are huge, in most cases, so I really think a method for harvesting crops could be thought up by farmers/the powers that be to get around that. Pay rates the same as the European pickers of course !!!ViewDate:

Should the Government launch a food-rationing scheme?Absolutely agree with you. I was brought up with rationing after WW2 and the situation at the moment is nowhere as dire as that.. As you say the current predicament has all been caused by 'panic buyers', so let's just leave the Supermarkets to do their own form of rationing before involving the government. Can you imagine what would happen if the government announced that rationing will come in to force in X amount of days time !!!!! It doesn't bare thinking about, and the first to suffer that consequence would be the elderly. And you can bet your bottom dollar it would encourage the 'nasty people' to start looting. NO, leave it as it is as THERE IS help out there for anyone requiring 'assisted' shopping.
