Is lack of relaxation damaging our health?the voice of common sense, thanks. i think maybe a holiday would help. And you are right about getting used to environmental noise, on one of my motorbike rides i ended up sitting outside a cafe in monmouth - there was the chatter of people nearby but something was missing... there were no aircraft, it seemed weird but also lovely not to have the wretched things either at high level or, the lower, private stuff. One of our holidays was in wales in recent years, inland from new quay, you won't believe it, was too quiet, a bit creepy in fact.ViewDate:

Is lack of relaxation damaging our health?like your reply Yodama, thoughtful as ever - what i take from your comments is that, to some extent at least, you make your own 'peace and quiet'. at 67, nearly 68, i am a motorbike rider, old guy, old motorbike - it's not like a car, you are out in the open, smelling smells and tipping about on bends, makes you feel like you are 16 again and a great form of 'escape' escape from jobs i should be doing but also just the sheer row at weekend, the flying club is in full swing, the estate is jammed up with motors, often poorly parked...ironic that i make a nuisance of myself riding around in the countryside, villages and small towns then. one thing 'bikers' do is wear ear plugs, they don'y totally cut noise but damp it, the idea is to protect the rider from wind noise at speed, on a motorway for example - anyway i sometimes use these just in the garden to help give a bit of quiet.ViewDate:

Made redundant at the age of 50bad luck matey, i was made to go, against my will, at 63 and that was bad enough. took me about 4 yrs to get over the feeling of rejection as ridiculous as that sounds.ViewDate:

Is lack of relaxation damaging our health?yes i can remember from my working life that farmers would just leave engines running for ages. my main grudge is that we are near a flying club used by londoners, the light aircraft concerned are constrained by a number of bigger airports in the wider area so they flock to the airspace where they don't have to seek special permissions, we seem to be in the centre of that 'free' space.ViewDate:

Do tailgaters bother you?yes, must be worse for push bike riders. regarding stress, a delivery driver called here y/day, since i now know him slightly i say 'how's it going' he replied he had 80 more deliveries to make. funnily enough I don't think 'white van man' is the problem anymore, we live in an afflent area and it is the jeremy clarkson types that are the worse.ViewDate:

Do tailgaters bother you?glad i'm not alone, I don't actually own a car myself although i do drive the wife's sometimes. It bothers me less in her car, you can place the mirror on night vision which helps but it is still a nuisance. At nearly 68 i'm still hooked on motorbikes myself and it will surprise you that tailgaters bother me on that, it isn't a moped either but mid range four cylinder. I think traffic has got faster (and maybe I have got slower) but any ride out now is a mix, almost equally good fun and being hounded by aggressive driving. i think perhaps stress has something to do with it, when i retired four yrs ago things were going that way at work and, of course jobs are not as secure as they were.ViewDate:

Do tailgaters bother you?and it's worse somehow with the current trend to drive huge monster vehicles, i'm sure they make their drivers more arrogant than ever.ViewDate:

Washed up and washed outa friend of mine has got himself sorted with a nice female after his marriage bust up about 3 yrs ago and he's 66 now, so it can be done if that's what you want. if i were in your position and funds allowed i would try and find something absorbing to to do. as you can see i am a motorbike type but i hadn't riden for years and remembered what fun it was from my youth, that helped when i was chucked out of work four yrs ago. I went all over, miles and miles, sometimes through the night.ViewDate:

Is retirement all that great?you are doing well for being retired only just over a year, i guess i miss the framework and social contact as well as having interesting work. i'm one of those people who never planned for retirement and hoped to stay working albeit part time but, in the end, it came down to whether older people who could get a pension should go as opposed to younger people with mortgages so you can't argue with that.ViewDate:

Is retirement all that great?thanks jean and ecarg - moving is something that we were contemplating as my wife's mother isn't well so to be nearer but, in the end, the wife's brother retired early with redundancy and went to live up there which saved the day. it did however make me aware of the cost of moving these days, if you are not downsizing then there's a huge amount of money that you won't see again, mostly stamp duty but solicitoes and estate agents take a toll too.ViewDate:

Motorbikingyou just have to google motorbike rental or similar, i once did it to find out rates. things have changed quite a bit if you are returning to motorcycling, it is faster and more traffic about, also the idea of hiring for a long ride would worry me, some bikes are more comfortable than others.
