Cannylass's bio
My name is Andrea and I am originally from the Newcastle-upon-Tyne area but I have lived in Canada for many years. My husband and I have been married since 1974. We are both retired now and live in a small town in Southern Ontario. We enjoy travelling but don't travel as much as we used to or would like to! My main interests are music (we are lucky to live in an area that has many opportunities to go to live concerts, large and small) and I enjoy playing my piano. I also love photography and working in my garden. I also enjoy reading. I volunteer at a local music festival each year, and up till recently I was a volunteer tutor to adults learning English as a Second Language. I hope to that again later this year. Since 1997 when we got our first home computer I have enjoyed talking and making friends with people from all over the World. Some of them I have known for almost 20 years online and have had the pleasure to meet quite a few of those online friends who have become true friends.

Do you still use an analogue landline? We have our landline connected through our Internet provider which is okay until the electricity goes off or the Internet Provider has a problem and it goes off! Yes we have a Mobile Phone but my husband and I prefer using the landline, and only use the mobile for emergencies. Recently our Internet provider lost connection through the fault of a workman on a job somewhere....so we lost power for five hours. The shops had to revert to cash only!ViewDate:

The British Invasion QuizThis was so easy! Grew up in the 50's, was a teenager in the 60's, so couldn't forget any of these groups!ViewDate:

Do you think cannabis should be decriminalised in the UK?I live in Canada (originally from the UK) and Cannabis has been legalized here for about four years. Before the law passed the nay sayers were sure that there would all kinds of problems with people getting 'high' etc. However the growing operations are carefully monitored and everything is grown in inspected greenhouses where cleanliness and safety are high priority. There are licensed shops which are authorised to sell the Cannabis and there are laws similar to alcohol laws in regards to driving etc (not allowed and if you're caught, heavily fined). So far I think it's working well.ViewDate:

Who is in the running to play the the next James Bond?As much as I love Idris Elba, my preference for the next Bond would be Tom Hardy, or James Norton, I would be happy with either of them. I'm not a big Bond fan and have only seen two or three of the Bond movies over the years (only one of the Daniel Craig 'Bond' which I loved), but Tom Hardy would make me more interested. He is just so good and has the ability to 'become' the character he's playing.ViewDate:

Surely It's Not MorningThis is me, sometimes several nights a week! Some nights I can sleep for about two hours before I suddenly wake up and the rest of the night is just like in the poem! Seems to come in groups of about three nights before I finally get a good night's sleep.ViewDate:

School dinners – did you love them or hate them?Overall I didn't mind the school dinners in the 1950's when I was going to school, but they were not as good as the home cooking my Mam and my Nana did. I could have gone home for lunch to my Nana's (she lived in the next street to us and my Mam worked full time so Nana was the one I went to during the day) but all my friends stayed for school dinner so I wanted to as well. The only thing I genuinely hated was 'Frogs Spawn'/Tapioca, I still can't eat it to this day! I wasn't fond of rice pudding either but it was better than Tapioca. I remember one or two of the girls at my table not liking things like peas, and they would be shoving their peas on to our plates as fast as possible before the teacher on duty would get to our table! If there was any left on your plate you weren't supposed to get dessert......but we would be sneaky about it and learned ways to get round that! LOLViewDate:

Which is your favourite Frank Sinatra Song?So many of Frank's recordings are amongst my most favourite music right from the first time I heard him singing 'Chicago' and then 'Birth of The Blues' when I was about 11 years old. My Mother was a huge fan of his and had a lot of his records (the old 78rpm records) and she and I would also go to see his movies in the 1950's into the 60's. However I chose 'Fly Me to The Moon' as my all time favourite. I think it's a perfect recording right from the first beat.....and of course with the great Count Basie Band backing him where could it go wrong? One of my all time favourite albums is The Complete Reprise recording of Basie and Sinatra. I so wish I could have afforded to go and see Sinatra in concert many years ago. Listening to him should be part of music class in school or something....his phrasing alone is a master class!ViewDate:

Do you prefer streaming to broadcast TV?Most of the time I prefer streaming on Netflix or other streaming services such as AcornTV and Britbox which are geared for those people living abroad (like myself) who can not access 'live' TV from the UK. Those streaming services carry so much of the British programs which I much prefer to North American. I live in Canada (ex-pat Brit) and there are only one or two channels that show British programming (sometimes a few years old) so being able to stream them at my convenience is so good. I like to watch Sports and News on 'live' TV though. We have access to so many channels over here yet quite often there isn't anything on that we want to watch, so streaming is the choice for us.ViewDate:

5 Reasons To Book With Norwegian Cruise LineWe loved our cruise of the Caribbean for our Silver Wedding Anniversary in 1999 on Norwegian Lines. Our travel agent made a note of our upcoming anniversary when booking for us, and on the anniversary day while we were on board ship, we were surprised to find a bottle of champagne (with wine glasses etc) and a box of chocolates in our cabin when we we returned there after a shore excursion! Also that night at dinner we were also surprised with a cake (with candles lit) delivered to our table for everyone at the table to enjoy! Really nice touch by Norwegian.ViewDate:

Hair and fashion trends from the 60sI loved being a teenager then into early 20's during the 60's. The fashions were such fun. I wore mini skirts etc, but I was happy when the short hair like Mia Farrow's came in because my hair was too fine and straight and hard to keep trying to keep it in a bee hive! The short cut was always...and still is, much more manageable. I emigrated to Canada at age 21 in 1966 and I can remember when I got here (with a load of new clothes I had bought before leaving the UK) I thought the fashions here were about a year or two behind the UK! A few people remarked on how they liked my clothes and that they couldn't get the same type of things here. After a few years though I noticed that North America quickly caught up to the UK and Europe probably thanks to TV and the likes of Twiggy and Mary Quant becoming so famous.ViewDate:

Do you have trouble sleeping?I've always had a problem with falling asleep since I was a child! I remember laying in bed listening to the older kids still playing outside on Summer evenings at around 9:30pm and still being awake when my Mother was going to bed around 11pm (she would stick her head round the door of my bedroom to see if I was sleeping and frequently I wasn't!) I always managed to get up okay for school though. As an adult I have a very broken sleep. If I go to bed around 1pm I toss and turn for about an hour before dropping off to sleep and then wake up two or three hours later to go to bathroom, then often toss and turn again for ages before falling back to sleep. When I do try to go to bed early..say around 10 or 11pm I go to sleep straight away but wake up around 1 am and can not get back to sleep for ages. It can be very frustrating.ViewDate:

Who is Britain's most iconic musician?I agree! The list is missing so many excellent musicians and so much talent, that it's hard to just choose one. I hover between Elton, Freddy Mercury and Mick Jagger, but then I could just as easily choose Rod Stewart, or Sting, or Adele, or Tommy Steele! The list is really endless.ViewDate:

AberfanI remember it well. I had emigrated to Canada from North East England and had only been in the country six months when the tragedy happened. It made headline news here in Canada and in those days it had to be something major before we heard much news from the UK. A very sad and tragic day. The poem above is very poignant.ViewDate:

Step back in time: to 1963I was 19 years old in 1963 and remember that year well. The music, the dances my friends and I went to, a Cliff Richard concert and of course the Beatles topping the charts. I remember the snow and cold of the Winter, but above all I think that year everything was overshadowed by President Kennedy's assassination. I remember exactly where I was when the news broke on the TV. (Getting ready to go to a dance with my friends and my Mum called out to me to come watch the news) In the pub and at the dance that night the sad news was the main topic of conversation.ViewDate:

Will you be watching the World Cup?Yes we will watch a few games here in Canada. I will be supporting England (I'm originally from England) and my husband will be supporting Germany as his family are German! It has become very popular over here, and expect to get even more popular now that Canada/USA/Mexico are going to be hosting 1926 World Cup! We went to a Brazil/Sweden game during the last time the USA hosted in 1994 and the atmosphere was fantastic! Good luck England!!!ViewDate:

The English question: What is the nation's identity?I am English born and bred but I now live in Canada. Most people here automatically ask me if I'm from the UK or if I'm British as soon as they hear my accent, and I tell them that I am from the UK and from which part (Newcastle-upon-Tyne area). However if I was to describe myself I would say I am English from the UK. (Even though my family have a strong Scottish bloodline, I was born in England so consider myself English first but I am also proud to have some Scots in me). The fact is that most people abroad think of the UK (or Britain) as a country first, then they might ask which part and it's then that telling them which country within the UK you are from works! (Explaining regional dialects can be fun too! lol ) -
