Is it ok to ask for money instead of presents?Until recently I would have agreed with you. As I get older it is so much harder to think what I would like as a present and I am sure other people find the same thing. We tend to already have what we need. Money on the other hand can be spent on small treats rather than one specific item and the gift can be appreciated over a period of time.ViewDate:

Relocating to the seasideStrange that you should say 'maybe even going to church's.. I am sure that most churches would welcome you with open arms for Sunday worship. As a bonus to the worship there is also the social activities that most churches have. Even a chat with fellow worshippers after the service can lead to friendships and introductions.ViewDate:

What am I doing wrong?Maybe happiness should become an ambition. Life is a mix of successful failures, we should not dwell on the failures but acknowledge and move on. The really important thing is how we measure success, it is essentially how we feel about ourselves and our relationship with the world. If we are comfortable that we have done what we can to help other people and live at peace with ourselves then we can say we are confident. Other people are drawn to people who are confident and caring.ViewDate:

English GrammarWhy is it so difficult to pronounce the letter t these days, so often it is ignored. And what on earth does the phrase 'ahead of 'mean when announcers talk about something coming before or after something, I don't know what they mean. At the top of the hour presumably means at whatever o clock. If we gradually erode English and say it does not matter, what on earth are we going to end up with?ViewDate:

ReligionLionel, yes those early disciples achieved so much and many since then has been been spreading the word of God, sometimes even risking their earthly lives to do so. Raising the dead remains a thing of the past_that is up to God in His judgement. Healing in the physical sense is more a matter of opinion, certainly praying for recovery is welcome and sometimes successful, but recovery in the sense that God,through ministry can make people at ease with their condition and ready to accept death. In my ministry I have been with a great many dying people, if they have faith their passing is so much more peaceful. The question remains, are we doing enough to spread the word even when the world does not want to hear it? Do we repent of our failures? Yes we do at the very least at once a week in church. Do we ask for God's guidance? Yes frequently. So yes I agree with you we are failures in so many ways,, but I believe there are so many people out there, whether or not they acknowledge God coming His will among His people, so I am not as despondent as you and I truly believe that God is working His purpose out.ViewDate:

ReligionLion, I agree with much that you say. True that faith drives works. It is through the work we do be it food banks, charities etc that we hope people will see the love of Christians come to believe. The kind of pentecostal action you adhere to no longer has results, indeed it can and has turned people away. That does not mean it is wrong, indeed it is a ideal. However we must work with what we have in a world that desperately needs faith. I believe that we must not dilute the gospel message in any way but approach evangelism in a different, gentler way. We need to lead and not push. I don't know that anyone knows the answer so it is good we have different views. Whatever we do or do not God has a plan.ViewDate:

Going for a coffee - what has happened to the art of conversation?I totally agree with you. Mobile phone addiction has become a real problem, it is the first thing people reach for at any opportunity and threatens many friendships and marriages. People generally have no wish to speak to other real live people in person. The tragedy is that our young people are growing up unable to socialise and speak normally to others. Even parents with babies can be seen ignoring them completely while they are engrossed in their phones.ViewDate:

ReligionLionel, my sympathy for the tragic loss of one so young. Certainly there is a great deal of pressure on young people these days, unfortunately some do not find their way through. As padre to some air training cadets they told me recently that their greatest fear was failure, that is so much pressure from parents to pass exams, pressure to get a good job and pay their way in life. You are quite right something has to change to make life a little more than a continuing struggle for many people. I understand your view that the church does not appear as dynamic and forceful as once it did. To an extent I can agree with that view. But although times change God does not and He is still at work in the world, we do not always understand why things happen, but that is faith. The church continues to do much good work around the world with things like relief organisations, food banks and individuals giving of themselves to help others. Can we agree that instead of buildings and the institutional view of church we can define church as the people of God being and living as the hands, feet and voice of Jesus, doing to the best of their ability and circumstances what he would do in the here and now,ViewDate:

ReligionLionel, thank you for outlining your background, it is indeed different to mine. I was brought up by parents who regarded Christians as hypocrites and anything to do with religion was rubbish. 45 years ago my first born son died and I found myself ranting and raving to this God I thought I did not believe in. Somewhat like Job releasing my anger and frustration led me to a deeper appreciation of all God's blessings. Many years later I was ordained into the church and regularly lead worship, visit the sick and dying etc. Worship for me is time when we put time aside, alone or with others to open ourselves to God. Rant and rave if we have to, question and doubt, but also to thank Him for all our blessings. That can take the form of hymns, scripture, praying or just being and letting the Holy Spirit speak, cleanse and revive us, enabling us to go out into the world showing the love of Jesus in thought, word and importantly in deed.ViewDate:

ReligionLionel, a church community is not necessarily within a church building. The church is the people that gather together to worship and hopefully be inspired by the Holy Spirit. The decoration within the building helps some and deters others, some leaders ( call them what you will) wear ornate robes others wear ordinary dress. There are so many styles to choose from because people are looking for what suits their own style and where they can feel closer to God.ViewDate:

Do you think Heinz should change the name of their Salad Cream?Well I use it on breaded fish so perhaps it should be called 'sandwich, fish and anything else you use it for cream.' On the other hand they could always leave it as the name we all know and we can use as we wish.ViewDate:

Do you sleep more or less as you get older?I get off to sleep easily and quickly but invariable wake at some point in the night and my mind insists on turning over any problems or anxieties I have. Often they are trivial and my awake self deals with them and dismisses them, but in the middle of the night my brain refuses to shut up and leave me alone.ViewDate:

Should we abandon marriage? Most marriages go through periods of highs and lows. If you are not married you can walk away easily into the sunset and try again or life the single life. However when you look back on what you had, the good times you shared you are left with regrets. You marry someone because they become the most important person in your life and you want to be with them forever. I know people change and things can get difficult, but work through your problems because somewhere inside your spouse is the person you fell in love with, don't throw it all away because you may end up regretting it.ViewDate:

Foreign foodI am also keen to know that hygiene is good in restaurants here and overseas. A food hygiene certificate is a reasonable pointer that things were fine on the day of inspection, but no guarantee that standards are met every single time. It is easy to become paranoid about this and miss out on some lovely meals at home and abroad. Try something different next time you go abroad, your wife does with no ill effects so you should be fine as well.ViewDate:

English GrammarI agree time moves on, I can accept the demise of the semi colon but I still cringe at broadcasters saying things like 'at the top of the hour' and 'ahead of the news's. I don't even know what that means, is it before or after the news? If telepathy becomes the order of the day that would be disastrous, what would happen when a lady asks you if a dress suits her, you know you would make a diplomatic reply but your brain waves immediately shoot back a reply that it looks ridiculous. In the matter of grammar maybe I am becoming a grumpy old man, but I remember the unintentionally humourous cry that went up when we went decimal,' why can't they wait until all the old people are dead'?ViewDate:

Am I being selfish? No it is entirely normal. Unfortunately many of us spent so much time working and raising children we did not have friends in our lives. In retirement it is more difficult to find like minded people or indeed people with different ideas to us but with whom we can have good honest discussions.ViewDate:

English GrammarAm I alone in cringing at American spelling. In my mind I have to add back the U's and change sidewalk to pavement etc. English grammar seems to be losing its importance to young people, I wonder what sort of a language English will become in future years.ViewDate:

ReligionMaybe, but try to join a church community which suits you, you will only grow in faith. Such a lot of negative replies to this accusing Christians of being hypocrites. Please remember our faith has been around for 2000 years and is practised in just about every country in the world. You are absolutely entitled to disagree, you may have come across a few Christians who were hypocritical but the millions of others just practise our religion in peace and invite others to join us.ViewDate:

Alcohol dependencyVery difficult for you, have you tried talking to your GP. He won't talk directly to you because if confidentiality but he might pick up on it if your husband visits him for whatever reason. Your husband's liver might be suffering a little and that could show on a routine blood test. Other than that you need him to acknowledge that he has a problem. Do you know why he drinks so much, maybe work related stressViewDate:

Spelling mistakes - should these be pointed out on social media? Not at all. Spelling is important to some and not to others. Whether a misspelling is accidental or the result of just not knowing the correct spelling should not result in a rude correction. What you had to say was more important than your spelling and any comment should have been only on content and then in a polite way.ViewDate:

Should tourists pay for the impact they have on a destination? The amount charged is usually small, perhaps too small to be of any use to the environment and only serving as an irritant for the traveller. Without tourists many places would struggle financially. If it is essential to collect the money it might be less irritating to tax hotels and they could adjust their prices accordingly.ViewDate:

How confident do you feel that the Government can deliver Brexit to the benefit of the country?Brexit was sold to the nation on false promises of more money for the NHS and restricted immigration. No mention made of the grants we have from the EU, the fact that we need qualified immigrants or the financial cost of leaving.and how that will affect imports and exports. Already studies have shown that many areas would vote differently now if given a chance.ViewDate:

Do young people play too many video games?Young people are missing out on personal face to face interview action. Their language and social skills suffer and very often they have little contact with their immediate family, shutting themselves away to immerse themselves in a different world. It is also a concern that some of the games they play centre around violence and are extremely graphic.ViewDate:

Do you wish you’d sought help for your hearing problems sooner?Maybe you give up paying attention because hearing has become a struggle. I know I have been in meetings not really hearing what was going on, reluctant to make comments in case someone else had already made that point. So much more willing to pay attention to people I can hear without difficulty. -
