jan19512003's bio
Took early retirement to look after two of my grandchildren, now one at Uni and one in College. Not been in a chat room for twenty or more years, hoping to make some new friends. Recently joined Slimming World as the weight piled on due to spinal problems, hope to be slim by next year :-) -

Volunteers wanted for silver surfers community hubs NationwideI think this is a great idea, and I wondered if there was anything like it set up near me? Farnborough Hants. I'm not ready to volunteer just yet but possibly in the future. I realise this post is old, but if you could leave me a message I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. JanViewDate:

Being AloneHi, If anyone is within twenty miles of Farnborough Hants, I would be willing to meet up for a cuppa - chat - maybe even start up a meeting place for oldies Ha Ha! There must be a lot of lonely people around, not only people looking for relationships, I'm convinced a lot of people might just want to talk and put the world to rights! :-)ViewDate:

Mothering Sunday - am I being unreasonable?I cant believe 'there's no justification to it'...….if these kids are brought up in loving homes, and I am sure they were...………..there has to be some sort of justification, kids don't turn on their parents without good reason.ViewDate:

Is it ok to ask for money instead of presents?I agree, I don't like it. However, I attended a wedding this year and it was suggested we give cash instead of a present, as the couple wanted to visit family in South Africa. I was happy to give cash in this instance as the couple have been together for a few years and have two children. A present in this situation would have been a waste...i.e. kettle. iron etc. My grandson received an invitation to an engagement party recently, and was asked for cash as a present. Maybe its a 'Thing' now.ViewDate:

Worried about husband! Also a reflection of my life - for the past fifteen years now. I intend to get myself a 'new life', I hope to meet - not looking for a long term relationship, but I am sooooo bored, and as he was unfaithful years ago - I feel it's my time now. I have been bringing up grandchildren and now they are over eighteen I have this 'Sense of Freedom' and intend to make the most of it. I am off on my first weekend away from home soon - not dating, just a retreat for the bereaved, but it's a break, and a taster to see if I can manage on my own.ViewDate:

Did the punishment fit the crime?I hated primary school. We had to have a shower at school, as our homes had no baths. The mobile shower unit would come one a week. Also we had to be checked for lice etc, so we were taken - in the classroom of boys and girls - behind a large blackboard where the 'nurse' would look down your knickers!! So embarrassing even at that young age. A man ran into me at playtime in the playground and broke my leg (I was six), he didn't even stop to see if I was ok. Kids were seen and not heard then. I cried in class and the B**** of a teacher told me to 'Stop sniveling child'. I managed to get through most of the day until the pain became unbearable. I asked to be excused to go to the toilet, but instead, I crawled up the flight of stairs to my sisters class - she had a very nice teacher - I told her what had happened and she immediately told my sister and her friend to carry me home. They couldn't really carry me and a lorry driver stopped to offer his help, my sister refused to get in the lorry (rightly so) but the driver told her I needed to get to the hospital, she agreed to give the driver our address and the driver took me home. My mum screamed as she thought the driver had run me down. Turned out leg was broken in three places - I was mad at that teacher and frightened to go back to school. Fortunately I didn't need to go back as our turn came up on the housing list and we were moved to a new housing estate (Easterhouse, Glasgow)….we had a bath!!! YIPPEE!ViewDate:

Did the punishment fit the crime?I got "The Belt" only once -(same year as you, year before I left school) for something I didn't do!! :-( I remember the teacher used to keep the belt under is jacket over his shoulder to keep it warm! Meant to hurt more :-) When I was in residential school, we had to bend over the basin and get smacked on the bottom with a slipper!ViewDate:

Ten signs that you’re definitely oldNo to most of it, but yes to No.9 definitely. They all look about 12 years old! Just recently I went to watch two of my grandsons take a flying lesson for their 18th Birthdays. I saw two girls, I swear they were still at school walk toward a plane. I was looking behind them for their pilot, but no, they put the bags (probably school bags :-)) in the back and climbed into the cockpit and took off! And just yesterday with a friend at the Royal Brompton, the radiographers looked 17 years old at most! Ha Ha!ViewDate:

DummiesI wouldn't mention it to a new mum...…..I would never interfere with my daughters bringing up their babies, as I would not have wanted it either. However if they ask for advice, that's a different story.ViewDate:

Alcohol dependencyI come from a family of alcoholics. MY father was also a drug addict, as was my eldest daughter. My younger brothers and my mother were all heavy drinkers. Both my sisters drink too much but would never admit to having a problem. My eldest daughter got herself clean and sober for six and half years, before picking up again and I lost her to suicide in January 2015. I have five suicides in my family, my brother drank himself to death at age 54. His organs practically burst out of his body. My grandchildren (four out of six were born with FASD (Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder). This can distort facial features, and the children usually have Special Needs, educational and otherwise. I understand this forum is for over fifties, (I am 67). But I cannot believe how common this disease is in all age groups. My childhood boyfriend has recently informed me that he is alcohol dependant too. This makes me so, so sad. I used to enjoy a drink, but my family members become extremely obnoxious on drink. I've seen homes being smash up, people being battered etc. I wish I had a magic wand to make all this right. I do not see my family now although they live close by (I am in touch with nieces and nephews). I wait until I'm out of the country to have a drink, and then its usually one or two. I couldn't cope with hangovers, but I understand you don't get hangovers once you reach the point of alcohol dependency.ViewDate:

Are you a Grandparent?I am grandmother to five grandchildren (and a baby grandson of three weeks in heaven). I adopted two of my grandchildren 12 years ago, due to my eldest daughters lifestyle. She committed suicide in 2015, leaving four children, aged between five and eighteen. The ten and eight year olds live with their father, and I don't get to see much of them. I am what they call a "Kinship" carer. I grew up with a without grandparents. My favourite one passed away when I was six. The other set moved to Canada and she died at aged 93. They say "Only the good die young", I strongly believe this, as she was never my idea of a grandmother. Never received a birthday card/present or even a sweet. So I vowed I would try to be a good parent and a great "Granny". I didn't fair too good on the parental side of things, however I am a good granny. My granddaughter is at University, grandson at College. I have just booked a holiday for ten of us to have a "Quality Time Family Holiday", I have also helped them all with driving/lessons/insurance etc. I know material things are unimportant, but when I was little I would have loved something from my granny, anything, and I would have treasured it. I didn't think this is how I would spend my later years, I would love to move and live near the seaside....but it looks like that's way in the distance now. I love all my grandchildren, and would do this all over again in a heartbeat. Kids are my life.ViewDate:
