Times tables & education todayIt starts at home. I was lucky. My Aunty brought me excercise books every week. She sat down with me to help. My dad read the newspaper to me, did not understand but he would point out small words that I began to recognise. Saying all this, my great nephew aged 5, plays on I,pad and he is picking up words and numbers as he plays. It's attitude. Respect. Children should be taught to respect their elders. Everything else follows.ViewDate:

sleepless in the nightEarplugs are o.k. But prolonged use can cause severe infections in ears. I guess you are working and need your sleep, hence the pills. Do you snore? Snoring wakes you up, not just the noise but they say you do not take enough oxygen in if you snore and then your brain tells you to take an extra deep breath to compensate and this wakes you up. See a doc to see if you have sleep apnoea, I have a CPAP machine I wear every night. It has changed my life. No longer have I become an outcast for snoring for England!ViewDate:

sleepless in the nightI worried about this until discovering I had sleep apnoea and that four hours is sufficient if you are retired. Middle of the night is a great time to wash your floors. Until arthritis started playing up, I used to do cross stitch and tapestry. you can arrange your silks etc without someone moving or playing with them. Made all my Xmas cards in the early hours. My husband bought me an I.pad, best thing ever. Chat on Facebook, if someone else is awake that is, play games, crosswords, search for long lost friends.ViewDate:

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying UpA good guide is Kim and Aggies guide to cleaning. I put on the calendar what jobs on what days/months/weeks needing doing. It works. Also I remember a boyfriend who was very tidy and every Wednesday he had to prepare and cook the evening meal. His mother said she was training him so that he was not entirely useless when he got married, also took him out to restaurants to learn how to behave at the table. She had a good system for keeping the house tidy, she had a laundry basket in the hall. Anything she found lying around went in the basket, every Thursday morning it was emptied on the back lawn. If they were still there by evening it went in the bin. I remember his dad moaning it had snowed and his wellies he needed for work were full of snow.ViewDate:

Change your night time routine for a better sleepA mug of milky good quality drinking chocolate, cat on your knee. Heaven. My husband bought me an iPad. Obsessed, playing games all night hyped up. I am making effort not to play games late at night. I was even dreaming moves or crossword answers. If this affects me at 65 God help our kids.ViewDate:

Will you continue to use scented candles?Don't like artificial scents of any kind. All full of harmful chemicals. Ignoring the chemical issue, candles may smell nice when lit. Blow them out and poo what a stink. Also you will find a grey spot on your ceiling where the smoke settles..ViewDate:

Has your life been touched by Alzheimer's in any way?It is hard but they are a danger to themselves and others. My mother would turn on the gas fire and forget to light it, turn on the jets on the cooker and forget to light those. She would stand up at six o clock every evening and put her coat on to go home to her mam and dad in the home she lived 70 yrs ago. We battled every night just over that. There were days she would go off without telling anyone to find her way "home". I have run around our neighbourhood in the freezing cold and rain looking for her. Thankfully our neighbours knew her and would invite her for a cuppa until we came for her. So, I would say to you, if you value your own sanity, being in a secure environment with caring people is the best place. Good luckViewDate:

Has your life been touched by Alzheimer's in any way?My mother had dementia. I never realised just how cruel this disease is. Most people seem to think dementia just affects the memory so that they regress to childhood. That is true but, the memory also controls how to eat, drink, swallow etc. It was heartbreaking watching her put food in her mouth and unless it dissolved would just chew and chew and eventually would spit it out because she did not know what it was. Unfamiliar objects she would put in her mouth and taste it. She lost weight at an alarming rate, just a walking skeleton. In her last week she was so thirsty but forgot how to swallow she would choke. Her sight went then lastly her hearing. Every day sitting there holding her hand, talking to her not being sure if she knew I was there. They talk of hell on earth, well this was it. Now, I,m afraid I do get annoyed when I see notices plastered everywhere, Dementia friendly, what does that mean? Everyone wants to show they care, but they really do not know what they are talking about. Those young nurses in the care home looking after her and others were unbelievable. The patience, kindness and care they gave their charges was wonderful. Certainly renewed my faith in the human race. I only hope if I am diagnosed I have the courage to end it.ViewDate:

How would you go about choosing a care home for a loved one?Own room with ensuite shower/toilet facilities. Although my mother had severe dementia she appreciated her own space. In the case of Alzheimer's/dementia check on security. Put my mother in a local home that boasted dementia care whilst we were on holiday. She got out through French Windows, on several occasions. Once it was freezing cold and they found her in her nightie in a neighbouring school yard. Also, most women, dementia or not, prefer female attendants. Good luck.ViewDate:

What irritates you the most about mobile phone users?Walking along minding your own business, you hear someone speak, so you turn around and say pardon, then realise they are speaking to someone on their phone. Apart from being embarrassed it's annoying. People walking along speaking into their phones, what's so important that they must speak now. Everyone in their own little worlds.ViewDate:

How have you been affected by the NHS crisis?I was in St James in Leeds couple of months ago. If there is a crisis it has not reached ward 29. The doctors and nurses were most attentive, caring, thorough and cheerful. The ward was spotless, the food was adequate. they were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble. I was very depressed when I arrived but seeing those young people going about their jobs so cheerfully restored my faith. They deserve a medal.ViewDate:

Should traditional nativity plays include pop songs and aliens? No Rob, I most certainly did not let the young actors know what I thought, their mothers either, I love them too much to do that. These young actors did not adapt the story, their teacher did. Of course they were not bothered, it's all an adventure for them, fun.
