Are we on a countdown to chaos? Most people who go on protest marches are law-abiding. You mostly only see the ones who are not law-abiding, because for the press it makes for more sensational reporting. I don't agree with violence against anyone, man or beast or the pulling down of statues and graffiti and damage to public monuments, but I do think that as a country we do need to acknowledge our country's mistakes of the past and realise that some statues need to go in museums with an appropriate plaque.ViewDate:

Are we on a countdown to chaos?A lot of people still do not really think the virus is real. Incredible, I know, but most people do not know anyone who is a confirmed Covid-19 case, let alone anyone who has died. I've tried to argue that even though the number of confirmed cases in my county, Nottinghamshire, is relatively small compared with the total population, the cases are spread around the county and they have not all caught it in the same place. There are many many people who have the virus who have little or no symptoms and they are all around us and if people completely ignore social distancing the numbers will rise again. I go out walking every day. Many people observe social distancing but many don't, among them manic joggers and cyclists who don't want their training interrupted and groups of people socialising in the park. Some people seem blithely unaware. Some dog walkers think that if you veer away from them it is because you are frightened of their dogs. " He won't hurt you, dear" one old lady said to me the other day. When explained to her that I was social distancing she said "Oh yes. You mean that Covid thing". I hope the numbers of Covid sufferers does not increase but I very much fear it will. I think it is only because so many people ARE being careful that the NHS has not been totally overwhelmed before now, but as the lockdown is eased perhaps more of us older people will need to further isolate ourselves.ViewDate:

Is it realistic to expect over 70s to remain in their homes for 4 months?Reading everyone's comments is a bit depressing. Let me introduce myself. I am 73 and my activities are meeting up with friends for French and Italian conversation, studying Italian on a part-time course, going to the cinema, going to the gym and also meeting up with friends for coffee and meals. Do I want to give up all these for up to 4 months. No I do not but do I want to catch the virus? Even more emphatically no to the last one. I have already had my U3A French meetings cancelled because several families in the vicinity have the virus. This virus is highly contagious and is spreading fast. Our NHS whilst wonderful just will not be able to cope if action is not taken to slow up the spread. Surely whatever can be done to protect ourselves should be done. We should do the best we can. I have been reluctant, until the last few days, to change my life style, but my son said to me the other day "Isn't it better to give up your social life for a while Mum than to risk your life if you catch the virus". I am booked to go to Italy in June but that will have to be cancelled I expect. Very disappointing but I have told myself to get things in proportion. People are very ill with this disease and some are dying. Compared with that, losing my holiday is no big deal. My friends are already talking about using Whatsapp and Skype to keep in touch.ViewDate:

Is it realistic to expect over 70s to remain in their homes for 4 months?I don't think over 70s are meant to self-isolate from younger partners or other members living in the same house, just to minimise contact with people outside the home wherever possible, to reduce their chances of catching the virus. Cutting down social contact with other people does not appeal to me at all as I live alone, but I don't want to catch this virus. Several of my friends are talking about setting up a Whatsapp group and also all using Skype to talk to each other so as to not go stir-crazy. Also the Warner weather is coming so we can individually get out in the garden more and go for walks.ViewDate:

Is it realistic to expect over 70s to remain in their homes for 4 months? You are right. It is a very depressing thought. If you cannot shop online then one suggestion I've seen is to go to the shops at less busy times. Some of the supermarkets stay open very late.ViewDate:

Is it realistic to expect over 70s to remain in their homes for 4 months?Hi, your situation is very difficult. Could you do your shopping online so you don't have to go to the shops? This would reduce your own contact with possible sources of the virus and help protect you and your parents.ViewDate:

Is it realistic to expect over 70s to remain in their homes for 4 months?I hate the idea of self-isolating. I live on my own and socialise quite a lot and the prospect of doing this for 4 months is extremely depressing. Until a few days ago I had been carrying on as normal (except for handgel) but I am now thinking of self-isolating as much as possible in order to avoid the virus. It won't he easy but I don't want to die before my time. The NHS is a wonderful institution but it is underfunded and understaffed.ViewDate:

Is the UK Government doing enough to lessen the spread of Covid-19?I don't think the government is putting enough resources into this. They have extra people manning the healthline 111 but I have heard peopke saying they just can't get through. They seem to be saying now that a lot of people will have to catch the virus to build up here immunity but many people will be very ill and I just do not believed the NHS has the resources to cope. They have been starved of sufficient funding for so long.ViewDate:

Was Prince Harry right to bare his soul on television?I didn't see the programme but I would always say it is a bad idea for people in the public eye to bare their souls in public. I am not particularly a Royallist but I really wish these two men William and Harry well. They were very young when they lost their beloved mother. They deserve to be happy now with their wives and families. They need to remember though that the press and television make their living by reporting news. The gutter press make it by making up news, as salacious as possible. They are not friends to celebrities and Royalty. They never will be. It is no use explaining to them how hard they are making life. They have no sympathy. They do not care. The people I blame are those who buy these so-called newspapers. William and Harry are very privileged in terms of wealth. They could have sat on their backsides and just enjoyed it or spent their time opening garden parties or attending flower shows but they have chosen to do other things to try to help people. There will always be people who will try to knock them for this. They should ignore them. That won't be easy but it needs to be done. They need to think of the silent majority who still wish them well.ViewDate:

10 clever uses for Coca-ColaYears ago out local pub landlord used to put his horse brasses in a bucket of Coke and leave them overnight and they came out sparkling clean. Someone also told me once that Coke was originally invented as a medicine but then they discovered that people liked to drink it. It is very good if you have the gripes and can't eat anything but other than that I can't stand the stuff.
